Scooby or any Chemi Con users . . 😱

Nippon Chemi Con = ONLY *50 ?

To use in three Aleph power supplies, in lieu of 18 Panasonics (= 82 🙂 ) - I was given 18 Chemi Cons

Have only recently received - are they really that much worse, do you think –in a PS??

Thanks

Hi Rick57

It seams to me i`ve been a bit hasty on the Chemi Cons .Just last month i used some Chemi Cons in power supply section of my lm4780 amp . At first i had some Panasonics FC`S in the amp it preformed allot better with the Chemi Cons. I only used the Chemi Cons because they where the only caps i had left at the same value.

When i did the test of all these caps that i had in my stock. I was testing the last two caps in my phono pre amp at the last stage just before the sound signal goes to the phono rca`s connectors.

But i still say the Chemi Cons only rate 50 and the Panasonics @ 82 in the sound stage.

But in the power supply section i would say it is quite the reverse Panasonics @ 65 and Chemi Cons @ 80%.

I should have stated at this was a sound stage test & done another for power supply stage. But i only found this out last month that some caps work better in different applications.

I hope this help’s you🙂

Best Regards Scooby300

Choice of Capacitors

As a high end tube amp manufacturer (Audion) the choice of caps normally boils down to three things.. Performance, cost and coloration.

Why build a $500 and include $2000 of caps.. vice versa why build a $20k amp and use dollar caps..

Its a question of "bang for buck" most of the time.. Personal taste some of the time and reliability all of the time..

I have used many caps over the years.. Solens/SCR, ICW, V-cap, rel cap, Blackgate, Michicon etc etc...

The best in my ear, and this is personal taste, teflon from pretty much any supplier, V-cap make a good one .. SCR do too. ICW etc .. They all color irrespective of what blurb you read. Secondly pio caps..

ERO caps are my cap of choice if you can get them...

But whilst you are playing with signal caps .. don't forget the humble power supply.. Dump the electrolytics, bring back speed in your amps.. use full polyprop supplies.. You will be glad you did..

Mundorf Supreme

I have been building with ERO, Rifa, Wima, MIT, and some others in my time of DIY'ing, but the Mundorf Supreme silver in oil is so far the best capacitor I have tried. It makes the sound more natural, you don't have to listen to acc. S-sounds and flat bass. You get more of the music, more dynamic sound. Probably because the caps gives the impression of a darker background. Even though its silver, it does not sound bright or harsh. The signature tends to sound slightly more towards the dark direction.
Have used the Mundorf caps in CD players, Dacs, speakers and amplifiers with good result.
The bad thing is that these caps are sooooo big, and are sometimes hard to fit them in existing cases... :xeye:

that is very same foundings like mine. silver oil is my prefered cap. even comparing with silver gold. actualy one thing i dissagree its dynamic. with silver oil its much smoother(no sharp transients) thus looks like less dynamic. especialy great combo is silver oil plus metal dome tweeters.
