Hello. I love this site and been spying for a while🙂 Only knowing some electricity basics and practically none electronic stuff, what would be the best replacement for a ECET71R103Y (10000uf Panasonic capacitor) ? I find that today's similar value caps are much smaller.
Also what's the best way to know when capacitors need replacement, I've read that when their top becomes slightly oval they're at they're end of life, does that depend only on power on hours or also age ?
Also, my has some hiss which from my search might be some transistors somewhere. This is kinda scary for me because the amp I'm servicing is like new despite being almost 30 years old and it would be stupid to even scratch it, and there are many transistors in there, how do I find the culprit ? Could this be consistent with the fact that when I turn up the volume to high levels there are some times huge crack and pop noises (more frequent the higher the volume is, if it's way up it will happen for sure, didn't turn it even more cause it almost seems like small gun shoots 🙂), which can be caused by too old transistors too ?
I've also seen somewhere (youtube actually, I know it's not too popular in here but there are bad and good videos I guess...🙂) that the hiss could also be caused by bad resistors.
Thanks and love the site, it's the best one of the kind with very knowledgeable members, just hope some pop up.
Merry Christmas to all!

Hiss in a 30 year old amp could be a faulty resistor. To fault-find an amp you need the circuit diagram, the ability to read it, and some test equipment (minimum, a DVM).
Maybe I can start checking the amp somewhere (suggestions accepted) and post here the schematics as we go, that would be awesome.
Reread my post and forgot to say what amp it is! It's a good old Technics SE-A5, before the plastic era🙂 I managed to find the service manual. I can read simple schematics by checking what the simbols mean, but I the complicated stuff like in the service manual is hard for me.
A digital volt meter I can get easily or borrow, as well as other stuff.
What about the capacitors ?
Thanks
