I am planning to upgrade the existing capacitor in the Klipsch RB 81 II speaker crossover. The capacitor has markings "336J 100V". I want to find out what 336J stand for.
Thanks,

A quick googling of capacitor markings indicates it's likely a 33uF capacitor. Try putting the crossover schematic together and posting an image. Would be easier to tell that way if that's in the ballpark. You can use XSim as a quick way to draw the schematic. Remember to use the ground symbol at the negative amp terminal so you don't have to draw all the ground return connections.

Post a picture of the crossover too. 🙂 I saw some weird things online regarding the coils and would like to see what you have.

Thank you all for the enlightening explanations! Now, I can start looking for an "affordable" 33uF 100V 5% cap. I don't think I will be able to post the schematic of the crossover but I have attached the pic. of the actual piece.

Hi Tom,
If it's in parallel with the woofer it's probably good enough. It's the tweeter caps that would be more usefully substituted.
My usual recommendation for cheap, high value is the Mundorf MKP line. If you feel the tweeter is particularly agressive, Clarity ESA would be even better. If you need air and fairy dust, Mundorf Supreme's. Another thing to replace before a woofer cap is the tweeter resistors. 🙂 Try the Mills ($5-$7)

I should add that at least one person reported to me that replacing the woofer cap in a Wharferdale with Mundorfs did good things for them. I've never tried this.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but could you tell me the mH rating of the woofers inductor? (the black one hiding behind the big woofer capacitor in the pic above) 🙂
