Hey Mooly just wanted you to know..The links for the images of the different filetypes is wrong on that page......... The link for PDF for example is http://corigin.dastatic.com/forums/images/attach/pdf.gif and shows an empty box.... The right link is http://dastatic.com/forums/images/attach/pdf.gif

All the links on that page should be http://dastatic.com/forums/images/attach/* and not http://corigin.dastatic.com/forums/images/attach/*

Can't upload 2.1 MB JPG picture. Is there a new limit?
I think the limit is, and was somewhat below 2MB. I have gotten this error when I have attempted to upload too large a picture.
Really anything over a few hundred K is larger than necessary or convenient for many of us as the forum software in the past did not resize large pictures until the page was refreshed.
I tend to upload larger than 2MB picture here too and I badly can't make any attachment. But when I tried to upload another one, one with lighter size on disk, I succeeded. The picture size really matter here, so the next you can't attach a photo try changing it.
I still have to refresh the page to get the text attached to oversized pics to fit on screen............... the forum software in the past did not resize large pictures until the page was refreshed.
It has happened three times today !
I don't doubt it, I just haven't run across it yet. Pano long ago posted on how to post appropriate pictures to the forum. I find it annoying too, and I have a pretty slow DSL internet connection so a post with a lot of large pictures in it can take a long time to load.
These pics are 232 KB and 172 KB. Originally about 3MB each, they were exported from iPhoto as jpegs at medium quality and 1400 max pixel width.
And... they are more than good enough, not bandwidth hogs.
Precisely. I only know mac so I can't help with PC but surely there's a program that makes resizing easy, yes?
Many choices, Faststone is the one I use and prefer:
FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter

Lovely village!
I'm also having trouble uploading images for some reason. One thing I've noticed is that the picture list in the window doesn't refresh after hitting the "upload" button, but just stays blank. I'll try and downsize my pics to see if that makes a difference. 😕

No need for 2 meg photos on the web - as Cal demonstrates so well.
There is useful info in this sticky thread
Pictures -- Why Not attach Them ??

Here are three Moderators confirming that smaller pics with lots of resolution and very low kilo-bit count are good enough for the majority of our communication.
Isn't about time you ganged up on the Forum Administrators and got them to place smaller limits on all pics and ban completely all picture links to remote servers?

Thanks for the clarification. I'll admit that it sometimes takes a bit of experimenting to arrive at a balance between illustrating the appropriate amount of detail and just telling the overall story, but that's also our due as responsible citizens of this forum. I believe many people - myself included - are prone to fall into a sort of "megapixel frenzy" that's fueled in part by the newer breed of cameras (DSLRs in particular; 36 MP, anyone?).
To reinforce the moderators' position I've attached two pictures. The first is near the maximum "legal" jpeg size (as stated in the legend at the bottom of the attachment window) at ~956 kilobytes, 5198 x 2800 pixels. The second is 398 kilobytes at a resolution of 2000 x 1077. For illustration purposes, the larger picture is really no better than the smaller one.

I've lost the ability to upload anything to a post. The "choose files" button has gone missing completely.
