Im using jriver media centre on a computer i built to run an external Nad dac to a set of magnepan speakers which do well when you add a subwoofer and Jriver allows you to create custom cutoff points for the signal to the dac (im thinking of going down to 34 hz) through the usb output to the dac. Im wondering if there is a way to use a pci sound card with an rca output as an active crossover for the sub. Has anyone done anything like this?
I'm guessing if you're planning on using them simultaneously, the sound wouldnt come out in time; there'll be a fixed time delay between the two devices outputs.
If it was a fixed time delay it could be done but i fear it is not ( not sure, but some expert of digital usb format could enlight us about it).
You might run into driver conflict too: running two different interface at the same time on same software is not widely spread option.
Does your (usb) Dac have other digital input? If yes which format?
If it have an Spdif/Toslink digital input then it could be possible using something like an Rme 9632 to drive the DAC though digital input and use the analog outputs of the RME for your sub.
That way both sets of converters will see same latency and clock source ( configured through the Rme Asio drivers) but it might limit the sampling rate frequency. And you could find yourself decide the outboard DAC to not be on par with the RME's one... and choose to discard the NAD and run only on the RME dacs ( through the expansion board for up to 3ways ( 6 output availlable) or if you want dc servoed balanced drive ...).
