Got a 1971 Peavey series 300 bass amp that has 2 4200 MFD 50 vdc can capacitors. The ends are bulging so thought I should replace them. Local electronics store suggested electrolytic caps with same capacitance and voltage but the fuse blew when I connected them. Is there a difference between a can cap and an electrolytic (besides size). Thanks.
Any chance you reversed one when replacing them? Would be a likely cause unless you got bad ones as far as replacements.
Really no difference between cans and axial lead capacitors.

Maybe...

Maybe. They are connected in series so red to positive, then negative to positive of next one then negative to black?

A reversed cap shouldn’t have blown a fuse, at least not until the cap blew up.
Was the amp working before the cap swap?

Amp was working fine before I replaced the caps. I did notice the wire harness from the plug had melted a little which suggests a short somewhere. The caps seem fine. Anywhere I should check first for a short?
