Can this be serious?

Cut and Pasted this from a 6 Moons review.

"Over the years we auditioned a number of class D-based designs and had mixed feelings. There always was something uncomfortable in the music reproduced. Exceptions were class D amplifiers mounted in a wooden enclosure. Somehow the wood’s natural filtering took off the nasty edges. With the Kharma MP150 a similar effect was achieved by loosening one of the screws on the bottom to let the amplifier breathe".

well, not everyone are so fortunate to be able to build their own stuff

have to say, when friends ask me about what to buy, I usually check the 6 moon site to see what is available on the market

but mostly just checking the designs and prices, suppliers etc

they can write whatever they like, I don't care one way or the other
it's their game, not mine

No, they're not. But promoting fraud is not related to building vs buying. You can actually buy well-engineered equipment that contains no voodoo, amazing as that seems. Likewise, you can avoid buying magic rocks, magic wires, magic room treatment devices, magic cable lifters, magic chips, and other items of useless esoterica promoted by those guys, and still somehow manage to have good sound. Again, amazing.

I didn't know that wood has "natural filtering" capabilities. What does it "filter"? Maybe, the sighted testing "filtered" the reviewer's perceptions?

I am fascinated by the complete lack of any logical thought processes associated with this startling revelation, and by the anthropomorphic notion of an inanimate object "breathing".
I wonder how many bits of the amp were fiddled with to arrive at this "tweak"? My guess is that it was was formed out of some vague idea that that if the sound is "constrained" then loosening something would work. Again, sighted testing and expectation fulfilled.

I really would like to know which people, who live around me, think like this so I can cross the street to avoid them.

Breathing amps.....?

Actually, I have encased my Pass DIY F-5 amp in nitrous oxide. As a result, my bass spectrum has more power, measured in foot-pounds/dB. In addition, my high notes get to the speakers faster (measured in meters/microsecond/hz).

Trust me. Honestly. No kidding. 😱

I've found that smashing something with a hammer can make a significant sonic improvement with any piece of equipment, completely removing any noise and distortion generated by it. During the process a great amount of noise is released, but after that it's dead quiet.

Highly recommended tweak.

Just to play out what possible reasons this may be true... Loosening a screw to let it breathe may let more air in to reduce temps, thereby improving sound? Or with class D amps there is RF spray coming off the unshielded inductors. If you put in inside a metal box (Faraday cage) the RF intensity is higher inside the box and causes interference RF pickup onto the fat metal film poly input caps which act like antennas. In a wooden box, the RF passes through and out and interferes less with input cap RF coupling. Same with unscrewing lid and letting the Faraday cage leak the RF out. If small ceramic SMD input caps were used, there probably would not be much discernable difference. The RF pickup by fancy big caps was pointed out to me by Saturnus who said to stick with small SMD xr7 caps on class D amps.
This may not be so much hogwash after all.... 🙂
