in a car
i am still trying to understand what a bass reflex system is and how it works. so i thought i would ask before i start a new box.
is it recomended to build a ported box for speakers that are 6.5 or 5.25? are ports just for ultra lows from a sub woofer or is it possible to use ports to extend and reinforce sound from all ranges?
ported or sealed how do i find out what size to build the boxes? this info seems readily availible for subs but not for small mid and high range speakers.

Hopefully a moderator can move this to Car Audio.
No, in a car I'd recommend using them in the doors...you can build sealed enclosures such as fiberglass pods in the kickpanels or doorpods, but generally that's to put a driver more on-axis or solve some other installation problem.
It's amazing how low of a response you can get from properly sealed and deadened door panels 🙂

sorry about posting in the wrong catagory
i should be a little more clear. this isnt a car as much as a commercial truck and i cant put speakers in the door or kickpanels. but i can put them all around my head (and the passengers side too) to describe it better, it would be where your sun visor is in a car.
so i dont get the advantage of a door acting as a speaker box.
if i do stick with sealed boxes (and i really want to try ported) how big do i make the inside volume of the boxes? all of the custom fiber glass things i have seen dont seem to be aiming for a interior dimension as much as the axis/install thing you pointed out. i cant help be feel that the volume should be acounted for

Porting
Scampo:
What your alluding to is what is called The T/S parameters. The TS refers to two gentlemen Thiele and Small........
These two guys pioneered the mathmatical specifications of speaker drivers.
With this collection of specifications anyone??? can calculate internal volumes of speaker boxes....for either sealed systems or ported designs.
Some of us here have these math formulas well memorized & can crunch some numbers for ya ...But we need these parameters to get started.

If you're using a sub, there is no point in porting the mid speakers.
Otherwise, as Richard said, you need the T/S parameters of the driver.
Whether a driver is suitable for a ported enclosure depends on a combination of these parameters. These can be input to a program like WINISD or Unibox (both free to download) to find the box and port size.

i am doing this because i have always wanted to learn and know about this and i think this is a great learning oppertunity. can anyone give me a link to learn more about the T/S parameters and what they all mean (hopefully explainations i dont need a PhD in car audio to understand).
i downloaded winisd and it is quite confusing but i am hoping i can get it straghtened out. although i appreciate the offer to crunch the numbers for me i would really rather learn how to do it myself and instead bug you for the information on T/S and winISD
if i do get the T/S parameters should i build little boxes for them to a specific size? like a sub box. will the dimensions for these size speakers be as crucial as a sub box?
