Can I afford my SE amp ??

Hi there,
i just got my latest electricity bill and I think its telling me that its costing me €30.00 per month to run my SE amp.
I have it running most days for up 10 hours a day. It is a CCS loaded 807 parafeed amp, with the CCS been a TT21.
Do you think I'am imagining the cost of running it - or does it sound about right.

I dragged out my old Gainclone to see if I could go back. As soon as I switched it on I thought to myself wheres the mid range gone. Bass is a bit muted as well, but I put that down to the tuning of my speakers. I was a bit dissapointed and straight away was hankering for my SE amp again.

Shoog,
G'day from Down Under.

I reckon you've mucked up the cost calculation - unless your power is a lot more expensive than we pay in Oz it will not be costing anything like 30 Euros. Say 250W draw (upper limit guess) at 10 hrs per day is 2.5 kW Hrs x 30 days is 75 kW/hrs per month.

Besides you save a bit on heating costs and if you were'nt at home listening to your amp you'd be out at the pub drinking or off chasing women. You'd find that a damn sight more expensive.

Cheers,
Ian

What? If you have no other appliances but the SE amp OK. I bet there are others like appliances the TV, lights, refrigerator, water heater, and more you use. I seriously doubt it costs that much just to run the amps. BUT even if it did cost a whole dollar a day I would still pay it anyway. What do you spend for your internet service, and telephone service? If times are that hard you may have more problems than just audio costs to worry about. John

A quick conversion to UK Sterling.

That's approx 7 pence per hour for a 10 hour run, this is based on a 30 day month.

Now have a 10 hour stint down the pub .. Say 2 beers an hour that is £50 more if your buy rounds (easily done I have the badge and T-shirt)

For how American & Down Under viewers Approx 80USD or 116AUD

I have just dragged out another Gainclone, it sound a lot more like the valve experience I have come to love, I could even live with it.
Its not just the cost that worries me, it more the fact that generally I consider myself to be an environmentally sound kind of guy. Running a class A amp kind of nags at the back of my mind all the time. Doubley so for a valve class "A", when you consider the various heaters.
I will do a comparison of a weeks electricity consumption with both a gainclone and my valve amp and see how things compare.
We have just introduced a lot of Halogen spots into the house in order to offset Seasonal Effective Disorder (SAD), and these are juice hungry little buggers compared to the Low energy bulbs we were using before. Maybe thats a good part of the electricity jump.
By the way, electricity costs have doubled over the last two years in our neck of the woods, but thats not the source of the jump.

Over here Hydro has a campaign on (with rewards) to get people to switch away from halogen lamps because of their power consumption. (There is even a rebate on the new LED christmas lights of about 20% -- they use a lot less power than incandecents and you don't have to get a new string every year helping ease the land fill pressure)

KYOTO PROTOCOLS will bring our pure class A1 tube based amps to death (?). I do love the bright smile of these bottles (yes, I run them 10hrs a day) ... and I do love the Nature ...

What should we do? Let's revert to PP class B(?)

Yup, those halogen lamps are hungry little devils. So how about a compromise? If you are running your amp 10hrs a day, it seems likely that much of that time the music is for background. Use the GC for that. When you want to sit down and concentrate on the music, crank up your favorite inefficient little beast, dim the lamps, and enjoy that warm glow.

Not running the Halogens is not a real solution as SAD is very common where we are. We have massive amounts of cloud even in the summer, which means we hardly see the clear sun from one end of the year to the next.

That was the solution that seems the best compromise. However I need to automate the process to take away the fag element.
