Can I Add a Balance Pot?

I am new to DIY Audio and need some expert help. I want to know if it's possible to insert a DIY outboard balance pot in my preamp's tape loop, and if so, where I might find instructions. I know this can be done via an EQ, but I want to keep it as simple as possible w/o adding all the EQ circuitry into the mix. Many thanks.
