Any listening experience is subjective.
I have an Arcam AVR350 which I think uses Class D amps. It just doesn't compare with my Pass Class A Aleph 4.
Since I worked on the AVR350 I can let you know this is a class AB design.
I have also done listening tests of one of the Maxim class D amps against the ARCAM implementation of the national semi chip amp. In this comparison the maxim class D amplifier had in subjective terms a smoother presentation but lacked the stability in the stereo image that the National part had. I put this down to lower small signal distortion in the Max and greater HF stability in the National part, however finding a definitive measurement was very difficult.
The max part also struggled with current delivery in some demanding passages
causing clipping, However since I was evaluating it's use with a very low
sensitivity driver this would probably not be an issue using any speaker suitable for a SE Tube amp.
Overall I was very impressed with the Max part it was fairly simple to implement an offered exceptional value as it needs no heat sink and a much reduced PSU requirement as much less power is wasted.
I have previously heard an early implementation of the Tripath solution I actually had to leave the room the sound was so harsh at the top end. I am sure they have moved on massively from then as it was 8 or 9 years ago and reviews I have seen recently seem favourable.

Andy
This hybrid is the best amp I've heard so far: Devialet Wireless High End Audio System - High hopes for the ncore though.

OK the AVR is a Class AB - I learn something every day.
I had mine upgraded a few years ago by a specialist company CPA Acoustics I seem to recall.
It now hides in shame against my Pass Aleph 4.
The Alephs Class A operation - with everything else the same - just puts tha Arcam to shame.
Difficult to describe, but switching between the Arcam and the Aleph is akin to putting boxes over the speakers.
I know that doesn't help the Class D debate, but I'm a firm Class A man.
My B&W 683s are a horrible load - perfectly suited for Class A operation - not so for Class D.

Just found this thread today......I just like to share my humble opinion.
I just happen to switching back and forth between my MF A1s (class A) and Tripath Ta2024 (sonic impact) today. First of all, I think it is a matter of taste in terms of music. I used to have bad class A/B amps and I didn't like them. Then one day I bought myself a sonic impact and I was on my knees crying about what a $25 amp can do. It was like winning a lottery or so. Prior to that, I used my MF A1s but for some reasons, the sound wasn't good (I think it was a mismatching issue with speaker) I put it in storage. Until a month ago, I pulled the MF out and mod the preamp and such. Drive a pair of high effecient DIY speakers and viola, I love it.
Well, the MF is class A. It has a magic of its own. The SI is class T(D), superior clarity. I thought after I have the SI, it is all I needed. Then after listening back to the MF for a month, I'm not sure now. I'm now building the JLH EVO dual rails (class A)...... The SI seems to be too transparent and will present a piece of music correct technically. However, the MF seems to give me a special emotion which the SI cannot give. This makes me somewhat leaning towards class A.....
Let me see if I can present the difference in another way: I play music at my church every week. There are several well trained pianists and musicians in our group, who will play any piece of music you throw at them. They can read the music and play right away and be accurate at every note and the timing. Their technical ability is superb. I don't have formal training so I play by ears and always imperfect (per paper music). I always make them mad because of my inability of following them. However, when I play solo, I am totally open to my interpretation of the music. I can add emotion and even intentionally deviate from the music to accent it. That sort of imperfectionalism (is there such a word?) sometimes leaves a very unique impression and people would come to me with compliments. In this case, class T/D is the technically perfect musicians and class A is me. Some people prefer music with high technical accuracy, some people prefer music with a soul in it.
Well, I didn't know that I have already typed this much. If you have read up to this point, you are a very patience person and I appreciate it.....I will report my experience later after I finished my JLH EVO project. Initial test with the prototype already giving me a very positive experience....
