Can anyone recommend a good all-round measurements mic cheap or perhaps higher cost?

^ Pretty much exactly how I started out! 🙂

edit: I purchased a matched pair of these recently Primo EM258 6mm Omni Electret Capsule - micbooster.com

Purchaed for stereo recording, rather than doing measurements, and I haven't done any tests as yet to see how flat they are, but apparently a good replacement for WM60AY and WM61A capsules. Certainly from a recording point of view they seem better than my old WM60AY.

ISEM has calibrated mic with individual correction file provided with the mic . more than 250 eu though !

So an off topic answer but due to the prices of drivers, wood and caps & coils today, not sure it's not an good invest 😉

Certainly the cheap smarthone Dayton mic or the famous ECM-8000 are good enough for most of the job !

In the line of Tony's recommendations, in case your PC or PC soundcard has separated mic input and line outputs, you could simply download ARTA for free and get yourself a cheap (a Pound or so) electret condensor mic capsule. All you need to do is to solder connecting cable and some sort of pipe to mount the -very tiny: 6mm dia or so- mic capsule. The original Panasonic WM 61has disappeared it seems, but various remade clones such as Monacor MC 4001 are readily available and and dirt cheap.
The mic input of a PC or soundcard saves you a separate mic preamp.

All you need to do is set the PC input and output right, connect an amp between line out and speaker, and start experimenting.

For starting experiments this will work fine. Sets you back a few Pounds only, an will help you to get your feet wet slowly. Once you feel safe, then it is time for Focusrite & friends and aim for accuracy.

I have thought about this also. I have numerous mics here, no condensers though. I have thought about just playing with my sound card and those and get a better feel for what I need, but the little Dayton seems like a great choice of next step without the outlay.

I've ordered the Dayton mini mic as well. I feel its incredible value for money for a calibrated mic. I have some decent sound cards here so I should be able to work something out with connection. If it gets me near 80% near the V2 at 10x the cost I will be happy and it'll get me started with measuring anyway. I did own the umik1 once but sold it as I never used it so the cheap Dayton may be a good solution for now. Its only because I have made two sets of loudspeakers and going active with one. I just want some guide to what's going on other than trusting my ears, which are all that counts but what I don't know I don't know, and this is a more precise method of what's happening.
