Can anybody explain the Bass module

Can anybody please explain the type of sub enclosure below?
I have auditioned at the showroom and at my friends house. I was impressed with the footprint to output ratio.


Can anyone explain what type on enclosure is this?
1. Why have they covered the driver with a baffle?
2. Is it a port or a horn.
3. why the holes have been made at the port or tunnel?
4. Does top facing woofer create any issues with drag?

1. Aesthetics. It also adds a small mass to the cone due to the air pocket that is attached to the cone.
2. Port
3. Those holes likely are mounting points for a side panel. The small silver grey windows might be cut outs with a resistive material fitted, to dampen the port resonances. These would be problematic otherwise, because they occur at low frequencies with such a long port. Bose calls it QuietPort, see YouTube
4. What do you mean by drag?

If you seek more information, please reveal the brand and model. Why so secretive? This is a Bose Bass Module 700 - vented (bass reflex) enclosure with a long port (because of small enclosure volume). Driver is slot loaded to lower a little bit resonance frequency. Small openings (holes) on the port are covered with some acoustically resistive material and are supposed to reduce "distortion", whatever it means (maybe reduces port resonances).
Edit: if you want the best footprint to output ratio, do audition some used Sunfire True Subwoofer model.

Yes this is the Bose Bass module , Its model 300 and not 700 (Doesn't make a difference anyway).
I couldn't say the model as I was not sure reavealing a model or make and discussing its technologies might be allowed here.


If we wanted to create a similar DIY sub, how can we proceed?

Long-throw driver in a slot-loaded ported box. ie, heading towards a 6th order bandpass with a small front chamber.

It isn't anything special, although chances are there's some DSP helping along the way.

Yes, it is allowed here (and everywhere else) to discuss about new and old technologies.
If you want to build a subwoofer better than Bose, it is easy: choose a good 10-inch driver, like Peerless 830452:
Peerless by Tymphany 830452 10" XLS Subwoofer
or Dayton Audio RSS265HO:
Dayton Audio RSS265HO-4 10" Reference HO Subwoofer 4 Ohm
mount in about 12-inch cube box (internal dimensions), together with three 10-inch passive radiators (PR or ABR) on other three sides of the box. This stage require software modeling and fine tuning the masses of PRs.
Than choose appropriate subwoofer plate amplifier, like Dayton Audio SPA250 DSP:
Dayton Audio SPA250DSP 250W Subwoofer Plate Amplifier with DSP
and you will leave Bose Bass Module in the dust.
