Hello. I have created a Biography movie of my Grandfather's life. I will be showing it in July to a group of family and friends (about 175 people) in a movie theater. However, I need to project it from my laptop as I can not afford to have it transposed to 35MM.
My plan is to use an LCD projector (which I have yet to purchase).
My question is: Will most mainstream LCD projectors be able to handle a throw of 60' to a screen size of 12' X 24' (these are the dimensions of the theater screen and throw)?
Most of the LCD HD projectors I've been looking at have a lumen value of about 2100.

In short no. You are looking for a very very high end range projector which can handle a huge throw like that and an image that big.
175 people?? For an image that big you are best off seeing if you can rent out a projector or get a company in to do it. This will work out far far cheaper.

Like kemly789 said, rent one out, there not too pricy to rent well one for a movie screen might be but its going to be a lot cheaper than buying one.
Since you're looking for a widescreen format, a cheaper option might be to use two LCD projectors. A 12 foot image is a little more reasonable that a 24 foot wide image, where most of the light would be wasted above and below the viewable area.
You'd need a way to mix the video signal across both projectors.
But, as you can see, this is getting expensive. I guess if you spend $4k to $10k on this solution, it would be better than spending the same amount on transferring the film to 35mm format. You can keep or resell projectors, you can't get any money for a film about your grandpa. Unless you charged admission. 😉

I remember someone at AVS Forum using a 1000 lumen projector on a 24x12' screen... got decent results too! I think that a 2100 lumen projector will do just fine. Look for a 16:9, and than get a variable anamorphic lens for it (can be costy), to make it 2:1.
