Here are some spoken word .wav's used as a before/after test for a mic capsule mod, even I can hear the difference! It is a short but with some difficult sibilant passages. The "good" would make a suitable test.

Cal - my apologies for letting Bud get to me.

let me get this right.
Being a sceptic JCs speaker friend Brian initially found they sounded worse, as a sceptic would. Then after 200 hours of run in he preferred the run in speakers? Did he run the other pair in or were they now box fresh and raw sounding compared to the run in pair...

Joly mods? His work is first rate.

Yea, he picked this and it seems to be far better than a musical passage for this purpose (at least to me). I have a hard time with some of the other A/B tests. I met one of Mike's friends a couple of weeks ago and I want to visit his operation.
The frequency response difference:

Orange trace is the 'after'. Notable increase in output from ~6K up.
That's right, he has a custom capsule made. I thought since "even I could hear it" the good/after sound bite might make a sensitive test stimulus. What he does not do is equalize the two and then compare. OT but my opinion is that mike capsules contain 99% of the "sound" the film cap, JFET, etc. mods are minor (with the possible exception of transformers). I have done a lot of research for my article in Jan's magazine, I fully expect flaming brick bats coming my way.

I hear the difference easily on my netbook speakers outdoors with industrial sounds around me.
A recording of an FM or even AM news broadcast would be more suitable, given that the proportion of sibilant sounds in the .wav file that Scott pointed to is unusual.

That just goes to show I need to hit over the head with the differences.
I spoke to Brian Cheney about his Bybee comparison between speakers. He had both sets of loudspeakers broken in when making the comparison.
Somebody FOS or What ???.
The long awaited subjective test.....and nothing for a week or more ????.

Doh, I forgot about the "burn-in".....eeediyot. 🙄200 hours of burn-in. Can't rush pseudo-science.
Yeah, too busy in the kitchen judging by the activity in http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/lounge/182567-food-thread-7.html#post2513227.Maybe the man has a day job and his evenings are spent pursuing his own agendas.
Eric.
Naw, he put the Bybees in his system and was transported off to audio heaven. He's not coming back.
Looks like he was still in the kitchen two hours ago....maybe the QP's have improved his appetite. 😛Naw, he put the Bybees in his system and was transported off to audio heaven. He's not coming back.

I'm back. 🙂
I haven't had a lot of time to put into this recently. Between work and the kitchen my time is getting used up. I will post more when the break in is finished and I do the same listening tests. Promise.
