Can you tell me what tweeters I like? 😀
I have used (listened) to Dynaudio & Morel tweeters a lot. I used to own a pair of Dynaudio BM6A active monitors, which had their own problems in the woofer area but the high end was always pretty nice to me. I think it used some lower end Dynaudio tweeter.
Right now I'm working on Quested VS2108's that have a really, really good high end - I am pretty sure the tweeter is a Morel MDT-33. These are crossed at 1,25k/LR4, which is very surprising since the tweeter doesn't seem to give up even at higher volumes.
The other room of the studio I'm working in has bigger Questeds (VS3208's) and the same tweeter sounds even better there.
I'm having a 3-way, active project coming up slowly, which is going to be an MTMWW design with 2x SS 15w8530's and 2x SS 25w8565-01's per side. The tweeter is a question mark for me. Sure, I could just go for an MDT-33 and probably be a happy boy, but I'm open for experimenting and searching for even better sound.
Something in my gut says me to try out a SS tweeter like the 9800 or maybe even the new 6600.
Out of the Seas tweeters I've heard (can't really name the models, all I know they were Seas) I haven't been that impressed. They sure are smooth but they sound so smooth there really seems to be no resolution.
So.. What tweeters are out there that are sonically related. Good resolution, low distortion, some low end balls (though they'll most likely end up between 2500Hz-3000Hz LR2 or LR4, whatever sounds the best).. Off-axis dispersion in the upper octave won't be all that important, because these will end up in a sit-down-and-listen -type speaker in an acoustically exellent room.

you will have an incredibly difficult time in beating the sonics of the MDT-33. In all seriousness, yes. 100% true. The tweeter is an excellent choice for speakers that need to have their crossover's designed..as they allow for just about any efficiency matching or slope and crossover points. This makes them a foolproof purchase (in terms of having a final and working crossover of good execution and sound), besides having one of the finest overall presentations around, period. YUou have to move up to the esotar and esotec tweeters..and even then..it's a pattern of trade-offs of one vs the other, not a battle of overall quality. Skanspeak midwoofers, and most modern midwoofers are designed for ported boxes (why put a distortion hole in box? It always leaves me puzzled), thus their upper ranges are ragged..and the ability to put that crossover point and slope just about anywhere with the MDT-33 in use, makes it the obvious choice. First we put a hole in the box for increased distortion, then destroy the midrange clarity by demaning that woofer...wot a mess.....
To tell you the truth I started thinking the same after posting! Since I already know I like the tweeter.. Why not just use it?

Mark K's testing page is interesting and he seems to like the MDT33 more than Supreme 110. Can't complain about that, it's cheaper too.
Oh, no distortion holes for me. The whole system started as a desire for a 3-way speaker with sealed cabinets. 25w8565-01 seemed like a nice choice to me, already bought a pair for testing. The 15w8530's always sounded nice to me, and I thought they could work well in an MTM, allowing a pretty low cross-over point (100Hz-200Hz or so)..

After having the Esotar T330D, there's nothing else that can compare to it. This is the finest tweeter in the world if you can find since Dynaudio doesn't sell raw driver anymore. But I have seen these on E-Bay running close to $900 a pair new if you want to go that route.
Heh, I love these willy waving best driver posts... so pointless yet you get a chance to exaggerate your own excellent taste in drivers.
Forget the domes, they're junk. All of them. RAAL 140-70d is the only way to go.
Oh and just in case:

For the original poster I'd say look at the SS 6600, SS 7100, Morel MDT33 and certainly don't forget about the Peerless HDS tweeter which I'd say is the best value tweeter around. Seas do make a couple of great tweeters that don't cost much but since you don't really want those I'll leave them out.
Avoid paying over the odds, tweeters like the SS 7000 or Crescendo just aren't worth the money. You can get a pair of excellent domes for under £150 these days, really is no need to spend more.

My best experiences have been with the mdt-33 and the new hds. I have heard unbelievable results with modifications of the mdt-33. I promise its a very noticeable difference, not one u strain to hear. The mod i heard really made the tweeter sound very realistic. not like a tweeter reproducing sound.
UNfortunetly i dont know enough about the mod, and i have been looking around for info but not found much. If anybody has any experience as i am looking at purchasing two hds tweeters and wouldnt mind knowing how to modify them.

Are you refering to the Peerless HDS 810921 tweeter ?
If so how does it compare with the Morel MDT-33 ?

The VIFA DX25TG-05-04 is also an inexpensive tweet.

Sure, the HDS tweeter looks very nice.
Right now I'm pretty much set up with either the MDT-33 or the SS6600. I quess I can't go wrong with either one. The low FS & distortion of the SS-6600 is a very tempting factor, but so is the general reputation and my personal experiences with the MDT-33.
It's gonna be a couple of months until I'll begin with the project.
The good news is that it's gonna be active = tweeter changes are easier, though not trivial.

Sounds interesting. Maybe some modifications in the pole piece venting..?

David Ralph has experimented with these..
I just took a peek inside our Questeds, and the tweeter is actually a Morel MDT30S.
If the MDT33's share the character but are just better.. I can imagine I'll be a happy boy. 😀

ScanSpeak tweeter
The ScanSpeak D2905/97000 deserves consideration in this context also.
Though it is more expensive than either of the Morels it does not have that slightly too wide notch in its treble response that the various measured samples of the MDT33 I have seen have in the 12kHz - 12.5kHz region -{where the human ear is slightly more sensitive than at frequencies either side of - see "Robinson and Dadson" sensitivity curves - more accurate than "Fletcher-Munson"}.
Yes such dip may be the reason some listeners prefer this tweeter, particually with program material that has excess treble.
I see that Moreleurope data for the MDT30S has a different high treble response than theirs for the MDT33, and that 30S's response may be more useful to evaluate high frequencies in a Studio Monitor application, though a bit excessive for on-axis listening at home !
Any comments on this ?

I think scanspeak D60001 sound much better than D97000, D95000, and D60000 , all listening with tiny baffle.
Never make any measurement though, just listening. Might have something to do with the flange size and shape.
edit: all listening done on close proximity, less than 2 metre ( inside car )
