Anyone who wants to understand this for real should read "Stick and Rudder" by Wolfgang Langewiesche. That got me over a ton of misconceptions early on in flight training. And it's a very well-written book, too.

Hi SY,
Couldn't let you be the only one posting here still! 😀
We were right, right, right all along!

Yep, exactly as we've all been saying since the first 3 pages of this thread.... 'tis the question that's at fault, not the answers.

This guy is enjoying his life in the wold of nonsense . . . 🙄
He thinks that the belt and the plane are independent.
Means that the plane is already at the status of "taken-off" from the beginning . . . Is it possible . . . ? 🙄

AudioFreak, thanks for the correction of the tile of my thread over there. 🙂

The plane only takes off if you change the wording of the question. As it was presented here, the wheel speed is what the belt matches. NOT THE PLANE'S SPEED. Therefore, no progress=no flight. Come on people, wake up.

I can't believe this thread is still going, I think I must have missed an email saying there were new posts 😉
We do know about aerodynamics, the point is that THEQUESTION IS FLAWED, I firmly believe as I said ages ago that you can argue either way (ie it does take off, or it doesn't take off) depending on how certain elements of the question are interpreted 🙂 once you realise that then you will understand why this thread is still going.
the problem is everyone is thinking there can be only one right answer, which would probably be true if the question was properly written, but it isn't, and people don't seem to get it, so here we are months later with no end in sight 😉
have fun guys

Yawn!!!
Most of us are well awake, Max, and we know that you simply cannot arrest the movement of the plane by anything which happens to the wheels.
Even if the brakes were on, or all the other 'smokescreens' like failing bearings/burst tyres etc., this would at best merely slow down the acceleration in a 'normal' plane, but wouldn't prevent it's takeoff.
The question could have been better worded, but it is adequately clear when it is properly read. 😕

OK for those of you who haven't read it, back here http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=778305#post778305 is a very long winded post I wrote which tries to explain why the disagreement is still going, it all has to do with points of reference, and whether whether you assume the question is about propultion or relative motion. Maybe I'm full of it, but anyway see what you think 😉
edit: actually I think I may have expanded on that in the posts that follow, and in particular talked about how people just ignore some of the question because it suits them..... but anyway the idea of that post was to show that no matter how carefully you read the question it is possible to have completely different but valid interpretations 🙂 It's just that no one seems to see that the other persons interpretation is valid too 😉
Tony.

Max, there is still that point about the thrust they can't overcome, even that guy in the article doesn't get it.
Re: Yawn!!!
You're right, the question is adequately clear and Max is not doing the sleeping. The plane simply cannot make any progress, not even a mm unless the planes wheels turn faster than the belt.
I echo his comments.

Vikash, When I see a link posted about this and the author thinks the plane will magically take off...
And Vikash, you'll note there are many more broken records on the other side of this. (ie: the thrust will overcome the wheels)
I respectfully suggest, I am echoing. 🙄

i hate to say this again .. but it really has nothing to do with the wheels what you should be thinking about is how fat the guy is thats flying the plane .. if hes fat it will never take off if he is a skiny lil ******* than it will take off that simple and how you know this plane dosnt have vertical take off ability ? does the question mention the type of plane ? or hell maybe its really a helicopter
