you'd hate to get confused with another Ruth

That's true, but it's nice to hear harmony as well as a solo voice - all three of which are very pure.
Wailin' Jennys are great
+1 on this recommendation.
I heard them last year at the Canmore folkfest and they were fantastic. Not everybody is in to folk music, but I think anyone with an ear for good sound would enjoy live music like this.

I saw the Jennys last night at Merrimack College in Massachusetts, third row, center in a hall with about 75 people. The sound and performance was first rate. They played stuff from 40 Days and the new record, as well as covering Leadbelly, Jane Siberry and Emmylou Harris. The set lasted about 90 minutes with one encore, when they came out to the front of the stage and sang off mike, a cappella.
Very mellow show, although they did kick it up for a couple of songs. Annabelle is a great addition to the lineup and really showed her playing ability with a couple of nice jams on acoustic guitar. Ruth's voice is so sweet and stays that way even when she starts belting it out.
I'm not much of an a cappella fan, but the three songs they did without instruments were some of the best parts of the show.
All three have a lot of stage presence and seemed to be having a good time interacting with the crowd. After the show they spent time out in the lobby, talking to the audience and signing merchandise.
All in all it was a fine evening and easily the best deal of the year at only $15/ticket. They are in New England until next week and will be playing with Jonathan Edwards in New Hampshire on Saturday night. If you are in the area, don't miss the opportunity to see them perform.

75 people? That's like them coming and playing in your living room.
There were about a 1000 at the concert here....
Good to hear you enjoyed them. Did you pick up a couple CDs?

I already owned 40 Days and had just bought the new CD this week. My wife does like her new Jennys t-shirt though.
And from this side of the line, if you liked the Wailin' Jennys, another band to see is Red Molly (name taken from the Thompson tune, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, of course).
RED MOLLY
We just booked them for our concert series for October 21, 2007.

They came thru again last night -- 1st stop on a short Canadian tour... Nanaimo tonight, then Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ontario starts with Ottawa....
They have replacement for the last new member... Heather adds a lot... a huge vocal range which can be surprising at times, and she plays the bass which adds a foundation to a lot of the tunes...
Still recommended. Highly.

Great! I will be seeing them on Friday night here in Edmonton so I'm glad that the new member is working out well.
Take care,
Doug
