Basically following a design along the artograph directions i.e. lcd will be projected onto 45 degr. mirror. Am using 2 high efficiency lights (Phillips) at 2100 Lum. each. I'm stumped at choosing a lens though. Would something described in the attached link be ok?

Try this link and formula to calculate lens requirements:

and you can purchase lens from them too!

That's the idea yes. In my case, the (lcd) display is on top through a glass plate and in stead of regular bulbs, I use the high efficiency lights (should find the right term for it..). It's use will actually be also as an art tracer since my wife is a painter. If that works, half of the project is a success. I did spot one problem with this design which is that the projected image will most likely be reversed (left to right) because of the lens which will make reading texts a bit of a problem.

so why not not do it LCD on the bottom facing up... its just a thought. have you tried the tracer on the LCD as a stand alone projector? i also have an artograph (well its still in the mail lol) im gettin a designer, i plan to do what your doing. please keep me updated. good luck.

I'll keep you posted. Right now I'm trying to create everything as modular as possible i.e. the mirror, lights, fan, etc. are all movable building blocks so moving the display glass / lcd down should be possible. Secondly, I'll try to document as best I can. One thing that is annoying is that there is allmost no way to do a proof of concept until it's all build together so the suspense is killing me...
the suspense is killing me too, my artograph STILL hasnt come yet, its been 2 weeks 🙁 ...but any ways i look forward to your progress. GOOD LUCK 🙂

Artograph?
Hey Neg Design, you deal with Artographs alot. I bought a two-for-one deal on E-Bay, and I'm not sure what the other kind of projector I'm getting is. Looking at it more, I think it might be an artograph. Can you take a look at this auction and tell me if the big white projector looks like an artograph? If so, I'll probably be selling it. Shipping costs were more than the winning price of the auction, so I think I'll sell one of the projectors to compensate my loss.

Thanks. 🙂

unfortunately
unfortunately I have tried this design and it did not work at all.
I used the KopyKat (that is the name of this machine, used by bakeries all over the US when drawing a certain picture on a cake) .
I tried replacing the light bulbs, tried a better lens but at no availe.
also the projection looses it's sharpness, it gets washed away in every sq inch.
I hope you succeed but I do have my own doubts and sad experience. An artograph works almost with the same set up but it is a more compact form and also needs to project at greater distance so everything is more accurate!

White Projector
HanClinto
That white one does look like a type of opaque projector. IMHO it does have possibilites. You could disable the light in the projector, place a lcd on the stage and build a light box above the lcd. All of the optics are already in place for projection and having the light above the lcd reduces some of the heat problems.
Just a thought

Oooooh... I see... I like that option. Wow. It seems like that white projector would work really well with a retrofitted LCD backlight option. Hrm... I wonder....

Han clinto,
whoa...that looks like the higher end Metal Halide model! i saw one (retail) for 1,000, if this is what you have then you are VERY LUCKY!😀 every one is luckier than me :'( lol
what is an IMHO?
im on these artograph practically 24/7. i have friends that have tried them. its not safe to just go out and buy them some have bad bulb lives such as the "KOPYKAKE" is has 22-24 hours. i plan to do the unthinkable, i plan to use LOAS! well good luck to everyone 🙂

IMHO= "in my humble oppinion"
Don't feel bad. It took me a week to figure that out 'cause I was too scared to ask! LOL!
About the artograph projector, I wasn't suggesting that he use the light source in the projector. What I meant was to use a transmissive lcd and some type of back light. (i.e. halogen, MH, quartz...) because the projector already has the lenses for... well... projection.

thats a good idea. i plan to execute those plans 🙂
