Anyone has the experience in BurrBrown PCM1738E ?
My diy dac planning is CS8420 or DIR1703 ---> DF1706 --> PCM1783 X2(mono) --> OPA627 --> OPA134.
But I don't know how to use the haedware mode of pcm1738 and how to connect two pcm1738 in mono.
Anyone can help?
Thx

Hi! as far as i know, the pcm1738 is only via spi (software mode) controllable... you´ll need a microcontroller or else.....
PCM1738 has to be configured by an MCU. Take a look at PCM1730 - essentialy the same chip with hardware configuration pins. You cannot run it in mono mode though, if I remember correctly.
If you want good mono Delta-Sigma DAC, check out SM5865CM from NPC. I just finished building a DAC around it, and upon preliminary auditions, it sounds significantly better than my earlier PCM1730 project 🙂.

The PCM1738E has no hardware mode per se only default settings in the registers on start up. If you want mono as in L+/L- in one dac and R+/R- in the other, you will need additional hardware. One small problem. In order to use the DF1706 you will need to bypass the internal digital filter of the PCM1738. To do this you have to write to one of the internal registers. As the WCKO of the DF1704 is fixed at 8Fs it is unlikely that the pair will work together with the 64Fs oversampling default setting of the PCM1738E.

Hi rfbrw,
You mentioned as like
"If you want mono as in L+/L- in one dac and R+/R- in the other, you will need additional hardware"
Pls exolain it more clearly?

Thanks andrei, for your recommend NPC is difficult to find in HongKong. So when i plan the DAC project , the burrbrown & cs will be appear on my mind.
The pcm1738e only has s/w mode. Any one try to use 8051 microcontroller to drive it? I has a little bit experience of assembly language.
Thx for help

No sure what you mean. Are you referring the how or the why?
For an example of a 2ch dac with differential outputs connected in mono mode see page 15 of the Analog Devices AD1852 datasheet.
