kidding
Just kidding about the bulb of course. But who could resist picking one up when presented the chance? Everbody needs a really big bulb to light up for those really big ideas.

hey nice gear u got there, i like the big bulb for ideas, im sure it will bring some bright ones lol.
As for the front surface mirror yeah u cant use the dameaged part as that part wont reflect any light/image that needs to be reflected in that area, id try to cut it up so you are only using the good area with your lcd if possible, not sure on the copy lens, its big though, wana sell it? lol.

not quite yet
Hey Ace,
Not quite yet on the bright ideas or parting with the lens. I think the lens was used as a condensor in the enlarger. I had the chance today to pick up a bucket load of big lenses, but no money. Some a-hole I sold some stuff to on ebay claims he forgot to send the payment, so I missed a big chance. Maybe none would have been any good anyway, but they sure looked like fun to play with.
I put the lens out in front of my Sharp panel with a 50W halogen behind it and it cast a very big and sharp image so I think it might be an OK lens if I could find the right way to use it.
I found what looks to be a good book, Modern Optical Engineering, in my library today. Will get some background, if I can remember how to do the maths.
Also a question, does the spherical reflector cause hot spots in the bulb, by reflecting the light back into it, or do you move it out of the focal point?

progress report and questions
Hi All,
Since last I posted to this thread:
I picked up a 3M 213 OHP locally and on the cheap. Thought it might offer some parts and in the meantime it would let me check out the Sharp QA1650 panel. It uses an ENX 360W lamp and is rated at 2000 lumens out on high beam and 1850 on low beam. It has a doublet lens. Also got a Da-lite screen for free. It is white with a somewhat silvery surface and seems to be higher gain than my old screen which was matte white, I think. Unfortunately, where I have to locate it is in front of a patio door and light shows through from the backside, which it didn't on the old one.
Now to the questions,
1) Using the OHP and the Sharp QA1650 my colors seem washed out and my blacks are more like grey when compared to the Sharp XG-H400U. What can I try to improve this situation?
2) The throw length of the OHP forces me to place it in a very inconvenient position. Can this be modified?
3) My DVD player has some adjustment for brightness and color level (Pioneer DV-563A). Should I turn up the color and brightness or no?
4) Same question as above for QA1650?
5) Will a brighter bulb, going the DIY route with MH, make the color washout, grey blacks, worse?
On the plus side, the resolution increase makes a big difference. I can now watch from much closer without getting an immediate headache. I hooked it up to my computer briefly and that may offer some possibilities for improvement of picture as well, but much more optimization is necessary on that front, too.
Thanks,
Michael
