I have a 400W Ushio retrofit bulb with a sodium ballast and capacitor and ignitor. I have been using it for about 4 months and its been working fine. Yesterday it stopped working, sorta. The bulb lights up just barely and doesnt go bright at all. Usually u get the reaction in the bulb and it sort of explodes and slowly starts brithening up but its not doing that. The ballast turns on and hums a bit but usually its louder than what it is now. I personally think it might be the ignitor thats not working properly or the bulb but i have no clue. Can anyone help me?
Check the connections, make sure that the contacts are firm, and carefully check for "leaks" and cracks in isolation of the cables. Maybe something is really broken, but I would start with checking cables, I had similar problem due to bad cables.
In fact our DIY projectors are short-lived. I already had a broken ignitor, damaged cables, and dead bulb (but it was a 750-hr short arc bulb, it died after maybe 500 hours of operation). Now I can hear one of the two fans is developing some problem, and soon will need replacement.
Regards

With the lamp energised, try tapping it genty (use appropriate eye and body protection just in case it explodes
). For some reason, this will sometimes start a reluctant lamp, and it will resrike as usual thereafter.
