I’ve accumulated many parts for EPI/Burhoe acoustics speakers over the years to the point where I could make a few new sets of box’s in slightly different configuration than the existing examples but still true to the original philosophy/intent.
Wife says I need to start thinning out my ‘junk’ as she calls it!
Said I could start with her……(not recommended 😀)
Question being is it acceptable to sell as such without stepping on toes or even copyright infringement……..I’m thinking not directly listing what it’s tribute to just as a ‘tribute speaker’ then list the parts used by brand?
Any input would be appreciated.

I personally see nothing wrong with it especially if you don't claim they are original factory units in any way and you only do a couple, not set up a factory and production line. Especially if you've modified the designs some from original. As an example, there are plenty of people who build clones of the large old JBL 43xx series monitors, Altecs etc. Just be really transparent about what you're building
There's a guy on ebay that builds Pensils for about $500 plus ~$150 for shipping. He sells a few, but looking at his feedback, it seems most of his business is in speaker stands and shelves.

Might be tough to market, unless you have customers lined up already for such a specific thing. Like a Pensil with MA drivers...

Thanks for responding Brett, Joe…..was more concerned about any legality issues?
Wasn’t really looking to make a career out of it, I’ve got enough drivers to make three pairs of two ways. There’s a feller in NY that makes new box’s for old advent components that average around $500/pr on USaudiomart.
My investment wouldn’t be great as the parts were collected cheaply and woofers have already been refoamed, I’ve got all the lumber in my shop (I’m a scrap saver!) only further cost would be a few caps and resistors.
was just a brain fart on a rainy day…….I’d much rather be in the shop making speaker box’s than listening to the complaints about my pile of speaker stuff growing to unacceptable size!
I keep everything stored in the house (for the climate control) in what’s supposed to be my ‘office’ but it somehow became shared space!
Cant afford to buy a different house for my speaker collection like Cal so this is the best idea I can come up with……selling the parts on eBay just doesn’t seem as satisfying as bringing them back to life. 😛

Yuk. MDF. No pictures of the bracing (how it is done can make a big diff).
One i would stay away from.
I wonder if he has taken the step of getting permission from Mark to make these.

That’s basically where the value will come into play, I’m a skilled cabinet/furniture maker and have many scraps of exotic woods leftover from jobs (so basically free) and if I could make some fine box’s they might peak someone’s interest.
I think most people appreciate fine cabinetry, so if the speakers are pretty they will sell.

Well after some research the cost of shipping reality has set in (I don’t know if anyone has noticed what domestic shipping costs these days!)
I’d never be able to ship a set of speakers it would cost as much as they’re worth to ship them, and knowing audiophiles are scarce around here in the redneck riviera I’m just gonna play around with the stuff myself! Wife can kiss my hairy behind!
I just put this together from unused junk I had laying around, a simple 1st order xo crossed to 10” sub @ 60hz……….I gotta say it sounds like I’ll be building a nice box for this, it’s stunningly good…….like really good! Blows away the Yamaha NS670’s I just rebuilt 😎
EPI 8” woofer
Burhoe acoustics 1.5” inverted dome midrange
Human speakers 1” ‘air spring’ inverted tweeter (Burhoe replacement)
Precision power ‘Sedona’ 10” sub woofer
Stuck in some old junk boxes
I can’t imagine what this will sound like in some proper boxes!

Drop the "tribute" word to begin with, it does NOT mean "honoring" anybody but a dead ringer for IP ripping, period.
So do not use the word "Pensil" either.
Just make beautiful cabinets (which is your contribution to the project), load them with the speakers you have, tweak whatever´s needed for them to sound GOOD and sell them under the "Mountainbob" label .... of course pick a more trendy/cool/exotic one 😉
In theory you are reselling used speakers at cost, which is not forbidden, which makes 10% of final price, and your own skill and woodworking for the remaining 90%
Could anybody find a fault in that?
Aren´t you free to charge whatever you see fit for your own work?
Personal opinion, others may differ.
PS: a side note and a personal beef of mine:
Everyday we are pushed to swallow Economic ideas which actually damage us, under the guise they are spewed by a "Nobel Prize in Economics"
Truth is it is NOT a "Nobel" but a prize invented by a Bank, as a "tribute" to Nobel, so appropriating and misusing his name.
So much for "tributes" worth.

It depends on the customer; obviously "free shipping" is out of the question. Remember, you have to construct shipping containers as well. The mdf blue paint guy told me he constructs a container for each unit...
My limited experience sellin' on ebay tells me there's a "sweet spot" in container size and weight that package handlers hate. The last speakers I shipped (old energy bookshelfs, held together by hot melt) got smashed by FedEx and I lost the sale completely. Something you built I imagine would hold up better.
I have an old Velodyne 12" that weighs 60 lbs, worth about $100 plus shipping. I tried to make a contain for it just to see - and it was just a joke - I could tell it'd arrive in pieces. So I abandoned the idea. I'll probably pick it up one last time to take to Goodwill...
I have a pair of JBL HLS towers that I'd dread making containers for. So much cushioning material on all six sides and that still doesnt guarantee the crap shoot outcome. I once sold an electric piano. Took it to one of those ship centers they packed it, arrived smashed. So they cant pack guaranteed either. Big Phillips receiver - I think that one actually ejected from the package.
Also worked for Amzn for a short spell, where I saw first hand how underpaid, disgruntled workers can handle things. "So thaaat's what happens!" Boom! As the "do not lay flat" package crashes flat against the conveyor rollers.
You'll probably want to think about size / weight of your product regarding shipping it. Despite the above, it can be done successfully.

Selling locally seems the best idea, buyer listens, falls in love (tell ‘em bring their own CD) and pulls out her wallet. You love audio and you live there so chances are there are a few more folk. Just need to reach out to them perhaps.
OR, go real big on the shipping and build something exquisite that would appeal to a Japanese collector. Fine woods and carpentry is a good start.

Y’all make some good suggestions/comments, thank you.
Bigun, I’d probably have to go with your first option because I don’t believe the condition of my drivers are going to allow getting too exquisite! Make some nice/decent box’s out of some sinker cypress or curly pine (some locally available ‘boo-tique’ lumber) which I have plenty of in the shop. Locals might groove on that.
Along JM’s line of thought I might try to match up some new still manufactured drivers that would allow the ‘New England sound’ style of speaker with simple crossovers and in your face clarity/dynamics then design my own speaker that gives tribute to that era……I’d only be robbing a general style instead of anyone in particular. Then I could go crazy with the cabinetry!
