Since I'm having trouble selling this 18" JBL 2242HPL I have, I figured I should put it into a nicer cabinet and attempt to sell it to a professional bass guitarist. At this point I'm trying to decide if it's worth building this and at the same time shopping around for some 8" midbass that could keep up to the JBL nicely. I was thinking the Eminence Delta 8's might fit the bill nicely or even the B&C 8NDL64 but am open to recommendations.
The thought I had was that a pair of 8" midbass in sealed cabinets above the 18" sub probably in an aperiodic enclosure, and possibly a horn loaded tweeter to finish the high-end off would be ideal. Can anyone advise if I'm on the right track to a good design or am I off my rocker from the start?

Hi,
Spending money on new parts to sell used / DIY stuff is a bad idea.
The top cab is not your concern, you will lose money.
It is a very good bass guitar speaker, and rather than building a new
cabinet it is best suited to replacing a poor driver in a decent cabinet.
(Trust me as a bass player, there are lots them about.)

I can't sell the 18" as it sits right now so it's worth $0 to me (or maybe $5 since if I invest $5 now, I'll be able to buy that nice of a woofer when I have the space to use it). I also have it in a cabinet right now of 3/4" MDF that I can purge, as well as a bunch of other plywood lying around the shop to assist the project. So if I add $200 to the project (in two 8" drivers) or even $300 with a potential sale of $500-$800 depending then I'm ahead money. I'm also interested in the learning experience of designing a bass cabinet with this speaker as the main driver. The amp may need to stay out of the equation for this to all stay profitable, but that'll be a question down the road rather than right now.
Still, the question remains, what 8" should I pair this powerful 18" with?
Or have I misinterpreted your suggestion of not embarking on this project?

Have you looked at the fEARful DIY designs? There's a lot of relevant info on their support forum for what you want to do. I've done quite a few top boxes, they work very well but good luck selling them!
Take a look at the Faital 8PR155 for starters, might be able to get by with just one. A pair of the Faital 5s can sound very nice on top of a single 18 too.
Don´t know why and anyway, who says you will sell a crudely homemade bass guitar cabinet any easier?I can't sell the 18" as it sits right now
Just checked: that JBL speaker is available, unmounted, from Parts Express at a discount price of U$1017.
JBL 2242H 18" Maximum Output LF Driver 8 Ohm
And is a famous brand, so a reasonable "used" price would be around half that, say U$ 500 .... as is.
And you talk about investing $200 extra, work a lot, waste a lot of time, to make a homemade cabinet (the hardest thing to sell in the whole Universe) trying to get
?a potential sale of $500-$800
Talk about "burning good money after bad".
Sreten is right, of course:

Some were new & some reconed. I got $375-450 each. I needed money fast and they sold fast using 'buy it now'.
18" Bass cabs is a pretty niche market apart from Raggae and what not... I run away from 15"ers, let alone 18"!

At least you can still run - if you've been humping 18 inch bass cabs round you could probably barely walk 😛

Same here.
Sometimes a Bass Player comes to buy one of my heads and proudly states: "I built an 18" speaker cabinet .... killer sound" ... one week later they phone "I don´t understand, when I play alone everything´s fine , but then the guitar/drum players drown me".
Midrange is VERY important, usually where an instrument character and definition lie.
I know no 18" speaker which is fine *alone* , now a few 15" stand way up front, think EVM15L and similar (aluminum flatwire coils) , similar PA types such as JBL, RCF, Faital (all expensive).
Some with classic round wire copper coils too (think old "house brand" Eminence, Jensen), but they benefit a lot from growling tube heads which make sound more "interesting".

I am familiar with the bass's spectrum and the psychoacoustics of instrument identification in a multi-instrument scenario. You mentioned some expensive JBL 15's work alone? Any idea which models?
Apparently market price for this 18 used is around the $300 mark, so this project has now become tempting again...

Hi,
Just sell the driver, if in good nick, about $400, on e-pray.
Let the buyer worry about how its used, its a great driver.
Upgrade or fix an 18" PA sub or Bass cabinet.

By the way, "Jaco Pastorius speaker" if that means something to you 😉
I recently bought what was described as an 18 inch 400WRMS subwoofer.
When it came turned out it had a compression driver in it too.
Great sound but I cant move it without a barrow !

18" JBL 2242HPL bring a lot of money on Ebay; just the driver; I know because I wanted to buy one to use.
Too expensive for me.

You can fulfill your dream if you build 2 4x10" which stacked *are* an 8 x 10" and build each out of 15mm plywood (with some internal bracing for rigidity) and load each with NEO speakers (Faital are killer).I know have recurrent dreams of being chased by 8x10s.
Each box is LLLLLIIIIIIIGGGGGHHHHTTTTT !!!!!! 😀 , loud, and punchy.

Jaco used the Acoustic 360/361 rig in most of his recordings. That cabinet has an 18" eminence speaker in it.
361 Powered Cabinet
He used the 360/361 setup all right, but later he also used the much more modern 370 , which is a full head by itself (360/361 were preamp + powered cabinet) plus the same size 4 x 15" cabinet, 2 front firing, 2 into a mid pressure chamber which then also exits to the front.
Looks almost like the other one, but you have this center rectangular area covered in black grill cloth instead of the blue Tolex covered one in the 361 .
You can see the cream painted cardboard domes through the grill cloth.
I was the head Tech at Acoustic Argentina (Import Music S.A.) in the late 70's , early 80's and of course handled their servicing, so sometimes I replaced the original speakers, square magnet Eminence built ones.
I still have a couple of them collecting dust 😉
So I was surprised when I saw some pictures of Jaco's cabinets with shiny metal domes visible through the cloth , clearly not the standard flat cream coloured ones.
Acoustic got into financial trouble and they would soon lose control of the Company in USA, so when the VP and the general Manager came to Buenos Aires in one of they business trips, they talked with Import Music boss, Alfredo Campanelli, about the possibility of installing a manufacturing plant here , I was invited to the meeting.
There , besides talking about the feasibility analysis, I asked about those speakers which intrigued me.
They rolled their eyes and answered: "Jaco loved the new 4x15"cabinet which gives him much clearer sound ... but then filled it with JBL's ... which for us is a Marketing problem .... "
End of the story?
They didn't get an Argentine Govt. "Industrial Promotion" grant which would have exempted them of Taxes for 10 years , so they built it in Mexico.
They still had lots of financial problems and eventually failed.
The actual Design Engineer (they were into the Management/Financial side) left and founded AMP .
