I build UcD180 based before but without preamplifier , loved result. Going bigger this time.



case is cheap chinese one sourced off Ebay, no big deal if i screw it up.
whole setup nice and small.
any suggestions welcome.

Enclosure bought on ebay,cheap,simple and clean looking. solid wood sides. 2mm bent aluminum top and 1mm bottom plate.
about $40 delivered to USA. same seller has bigger version 430mm wide. One pictured above 300x172mm.
I could make it myself but for that price it`s no brainer.
previous experience shows that hypex modules not get hot, not big heat exchange needed, screwed to 2mm case should be sufficient.

Is this a stereo amp or a mono amp?
I see that you have two 400, but are you planning on using them for two channels or bridge them for one channel?

What kind of tube ckt are you going to use? I recently made a 2x200W unit with 6sn7 buffers a the inputs. Worked pretty well, though I didn't have UCDs (which would have been much nicer), I had some IRS2092 modules instead and a buyout Abletec power supply -- I made the thing mostly because I had the parts already, including a case. It looks truly cool though, those silver bulbed tubes on the silver colored class d amp case.
12au7, I also bought that abletec but haven`t used it yet.
Hypex quality seems to be much better.

Stereo Hypex UcD400 amplfier HG HxR Built
I just completed a built of a stereo Hypex UcD400 amplfier (HG HxR) in a compact aluminum project case. The build took me a few days to complete. I have been testing and monitoring the heat sink temperature all day; it seemed to be doing enough cooling for the setup.
Since I had a compact case (this was designed for the Hypex Ncore Stereo set up), I had to give careful considerations for heat dissipation, hence all of the venting holes at the bottom of the case. Picking the right heat sinks is also a nightmare since most heat sink manufacturer do not have thermal data associated with their products. To facilitate venting, I added a case fan on top of the case, finding the right "low" profile PC case fan running at 12V is also a challenge.
At the end, I jst want to give a special thanks to Anna Jones from www-dot-alphanovatech-dot-com who helped me sourced the heat sink for this project. If you ever need a heat sink, take a look at their web site. Items in stock are shipped from San Jose, CA. Items from Japan will take a week to reach you. The best part is they have published thermal characteristics for each and every one of their heat sink. If you are not in a rush, they can also do custom work for you such as heat sinks fin removal or adding mounting holes (they can also drill and tap thread holes) or other attachment methods. If you know your heat transfer parameters (operating condition, max temperature, desired thermal resistance), they can also run a simulation for you to make sure you get the right parts.
So far the listening has been awesome. I also own a stereo channel Ncore amp that a friend of helped me built about three years ago. I need to do more listening to compare but so far I can't really tell Ncore is better than Ucd. I think it might have to do with the type of music that I have listen so far, will do more listening and comparison. Peace !!

Just did some vocal comparison between my Stereo Ncore400 and the Ucd400 ...Ncore definitely sounds better....more presence not as clinical as Ucd. Not to say Ucd is not good, it's just a personal preference. I wonder if classical would make any difference.

Change the input buffer to OPA2107AU 🙂

I like your project. where did you get power for a fan? what voltage you running it on?

if you use the SMPS 1200/400, there is an auxiliary power output available from J4 pin1. It supplies regulated 12V voltage.
