Here is a link to Infinity's best car subwoofers. I know, not a lot of you like car subs for home use, but @ $70 each brand new I'm thinking of building a home sub with 1-2 of these. Here are the specs:

Would this be worth my time to build or would I be better off buying a true home woofer? I'd like for good low end extension, so with that what would you say is the average LOW end on a movie? 16, 20, 25hz? I don't have a clue.
Thanks!

I think this is a great idea. I just installed an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12d VQ sub in my truck in a cement enclosure and I found it to be an exceptionally musical driver in a sealed box. I'm a bit partial to home subs combined with passive radiators, so I think one or two subs that you have mentioned coupled with a nice 15" passive radiator will be quite loud and deep. (make sure the PR has 'xmax' , heh, higher than your sub does or it'll reach it's limits before your driver does.) 'True home woofer'? Bah. The car sub is just as good; probably better than 90% of the subs that come in Ready To Rock sub systems. You just have to select an amp that can handle the 4-ohm load. Don't be concerned too much with the 'HZ' level. Most information is above 45hz anyway. The lowest bass is hard to hear and there is not much of it. Nonetheless, those subs will go plenty low.
I like the looks of those drivers. I haven't modeled them yet, but it looks like they can go loud and deep, in a box not very big.
Buy a couple, let us know how you like 'em... I think I might buy a couple myself.

Nappy,
you cant get them for $70, well, not unless you are a dealer for infinity of course. i think they are almost $300 retail iirc.
i was going to get a pair of those and make a sub out of them when i was a dealer, but im cheap, so i didnt.

Ouch. If it's going to be $300 per, I could do better with less expensive drivers. A *lot* better.
I ran the T/S parameters through Win ISD...
based soley on the freq response plot, im not impressed. F3 is 38hz in a 1.8 ft^3 sealed, or 24hz in a 3.9 ft^3 vented box tuned to around 22hz.
for $300 you can get drivers with much better looking responses.
but for $70? it might be worth it.

You can get a lot better looking responses from a $30 driver- see what I mean at the link. In-car response charts don't tell you what happens once you take the speaker out of the car and put into the house. Yes, the in car charts look nice, but as you can see on this chart you can get a whole lot better:

For home use these driver specs are OK but far from spectacular. It's worth $70, but not $300.
