Brightness Enhancing Film

I was wondering if anyone has actually received any Brightness Enhancing Film from 3M and can describe the results. I will hopefully receive some samples in the near future and am hoping for a significant brightness improvement. Does anyone have any idea (in percentage) what kind of improvement I can expect??

Crash: How did you go about asking for the free samples?? I wrote an e-mail to the subcompany of 3M that developes these films and asked for some samples but I haven't heard anything back yet. What kind of improvement did you see (percentage wise) and why did you need the films on both the front and the back? On the website the animate only shows the BEF on the rear of the LCD.

I sent an email to them and the film samples arrived in my mailbox 3 days later. Though i have not used the film yet, from what i read, the use of it will result in up to a 70% brighter display. It makes all the light from the backlight go out a 0 degree angle instead of at all angles which improves brighness. I will keep you posted at www.diyprojection.com. I am building the world first [working] led projector. lol.

Yep

I just got the e-mail to say that they are in the mail.

Verbose:
Good luck with the LED design, if it works the size benifits will be huge....I am actually looking for anyone with experience using the film with a standard MH Lamp design and their results.

I am hoping that this will improve my problems with dark scenes in movies and on TV. Most games seem to be alright or can be easily adjusted to look great. To much adjustment on the TV or DVD settings and the colors start to wash out.

I've had mixed results.

I just filled out the form on their website and they shipped them to me.

I am still not sure if this stuff is going to work or not. I started to play with the TRAF a bit today.. with mixed luck. It appears that it brightens the image a bit, but not that much. The BEF seems to make a difference but my eyes are tired from looking into the light too many times.

With the light turned on I layed a piece of TRAF behind the LCD, then I slowly slid BEF behind that and I could easily see the image getting brighter... by not covering the entire LCD I could see before and after results. However when I placed a fresnel between the TRAF and the LCD it appeared darker. Not sure how that works.

Once it gets darker outside and I my eyes readjust to normal light I am going to try some more things. Here is what I think SHOULD work... I'm not entirely sure though. My thoughts about this are simple. If the TRAF MUST be behind the frensel or it will cause the light that is supposed to be directed inward to be directed straight, eliminating the effectiveness of the lens. The BEF 24 and 50 are ordered in that way because the datasheet says that that will give the most brightness with the least viewing angle.. which is exactly what we want I think. I'm not sure though, have not tested it yet.

I am using a Fluorex setup so results SHOULD be similar. I really am starting to doubt the effectiveness of these things.. I'm not sure if the boxes that I got were dropped or what but they are flaky bulbs. I'll probably try to return the bulbs if they do not improve. Sometimes only half of the bulb turns on. Not sure why.

Not if I beat you to it 🙂

My LEDs and LCD will be here by the end of the week. Hopefully I will be able to locate an appropriate lens locally....

Film Update

OK, I've pretty much confirmed that these film's are useless with the standard Metal Halide lamp set up. They are specifically designed to have a reflector directly behind them like in a typical lcd monitor or laptop screen. So without some sort of lightguide in my setup, they won't help at all. Oh well, they didn't cost me anything 🙂
