How do you manage braiding long cables (more than a metre or two)? I keep loosing my nerves with juggling all the wire spools and jumbling up all the wires.

Play out the length you need then fix the spool end and braid from there.
Then measure the extra that you need for length and play out more from the spool and finish the braid in that direction.

When I worked for Plessey Telecom at Reading Trunk telephone exchange we used a multiplier of 1.3 for platting cables. That gave plenty extra to cope with the braiding. Alternatively there are cable ties of course or lacing cord.
Are you braiding for characteristics or just to keep them together?
We use (what we call) expando.

I use the same stuff, got it off of Ebay (in 10 foot lengths I think) though I can't access ebay from work so can't post the link I'm afraid.
Could someone suggest how braiding cables (other than to keep related cables in the same cableform, for convenience in wiring/debugging a large system) achieves anything? My understanding is that cables carrying different signals should not be braided (unless already well screened and/or twisted) while cables carrying the same signal in antiphase should be twisted. I suppose braiding cables carrying the same signal in phase achieve some tidiness.
