Hello all... I would like to build a pair of speakers for low to mid level listening that are capable of great performance and superb sound. I have been led to believe that the Cicada can deliver this. Nice, full range sound with good bass. Correct?
I am somewhat troubled, though, as always. I cannot afford to purchase their kit for $700 or so, and must build the cabinets myself. I am not really very handy with carpentry tools... so making an exact replica is not possible. I would rather make it how I would like it to look, and go from there. But, I don't know what volume to use.
I have WinISD and threw in the available specs to model boxes. I tried vented and sealed, and on that program, sealed looked far better. Its recommended enclosure was about 6 cu.ft. Isn't this a tad much? The original volume of the Moth speakers is 1.4cu.ft. vented with the equivalent of a 2.5" port. In WinISD, it shows a +6dB peak form about 65Hz-50Hz like this. What do I do? Does anyone have experience with this driver so that they might be able to help me on what volume and which enclosure type?
Thanks all

I have no personal experience with it beyond designing a ML-TL cab for some folks on the FR forum, but the Cicada is a fairly high Q driver, hence the large recommended Vb, though I get a vented max flat of 3.73ft^3/30.6Hz. Looks good sealed at this Vb also. Their cab uses an aperiodic vent so modeling it as some equivalent length tube won't work per se. You can come very close by adding stuffing until you lower the Q of the cab enough to lower the hump, but LF response rolls off also of course. Since it doesn't have much usable excursion power handling below ~100Hz it's limited to ~8W, with a real world efficiency closer to 86dB.
Frankly, the feedback I've read from some folks who've bought this driver haven't been all that impressed, and at $119 I'm thinking that one of the Fostex drivers will be a better performer, and depending on the driver could save you enough $$ to cover the cost of the cab materials.
If you haven't bought them yet, I recommend you do a search of the FR forum for some Cicada and Fostex threads: http://f18.parsimony.net/forum31999/
