Box sizes? for n00bs

Ok heres the deal, i was looking at building my first pair of speakers (so obviously they will be dodgy as). I am planning it to be a 3 way system and ive pretty much picked my tweeter midrange and im down to 2 woofers to choose from. The woofers have quoated box sizes (one vented and one sealed) and i think there just for stand alone sub boxes?. My dilema is i dont know where to start designing the boxes? or if i could use these specs in anyway?.

Then the next problem is the crossovers but i have a bit of understanding about them. So ill leave that question till ive planned my boxes.

Also how do you "tune" speakers? (see complete n00b)

Pretty much im a complete n00b and need guidance wether it be books, websites or news groups.

Thanks in advance!

Bought speakers only look good, often they have lousy cheap drivers, next to useless crossovers, thin low grade wood, and often no sound absorbent lining. Reputable name brand speakers are a whole lot better but cost the earth. OTOH, yours can be as solid as you like with your choice of drivers, lining, and crossover. Get the box and port size matched to the woofer and it will shake the neighbourhood better than any of your friends' systems that they paid big money for!

Dodgy? No way! 😎

I suggest you go for the Re/Sponse drivers available from Jaycar.. 😀 what??? aren't I allowed to pressure someone into making a good desicion?? the 8inch 120watt ones for about $85 seem to be good, and they are suited to a rather small vented enclosure.. 😀 hehe

Skinnyboy,

You should really mention that you haven't heard the jaycars yet, and as such can't recommend them on sound quality - only price and printed specs...

Thanks for all the replies ppl 🙂... one more question though involving RE/SPONSE! for skinnyboy! (not really but there Re/Sponse brand) The tweeter and woofer are both 8Ohm but the midrange is a 6Ohm, would i have to make any special adjustments for a crossover or would they be compatible at all?

Thanks

Design the box with winisd and build the box. To tune it, you have to play with different port length until your impedance peak is at the same frequency proposed by winisd. It takes time and the difference in the sound is very hard to see.
