My new speaker project will use an 8" Scan-Speak 21W-8555-01 as an internal active sub, 4th order filtered @ 110Hz in a ported subenclosure.
Of course I'd like maximum bass from them, and boundary gain is advisable at these low frequencies. Question is, what's the best method? Driver close to the floor with port higher up, or the other way round?

Your lowest frequencies come put the port. So theroretically, the port closest to the floor is the way to go.
In point of fact, though, a speaker or port is considered fully "coupled" to a corner or floor at any frequency if it is withinn 10% of that frquency's wavelength. If your port is tuned to 25 Hz, then you are coupled to the floor or corner if you are within 4.5 feet. If you are going to cross over around 100 Hz, you are coupled to the floor or corner if you are within 13 inches of it. The lower the frequency, as you can see, the less important it is to be physically right on top of the surface you are trying to couple your speaker or port with.
Still, if you want to give yourself every conceivable theoretical advantage, I would put the port closest to the floor or corner, since the lowest frequencies are coming out the port.
