Bose AM-5 Clone ... sort of

Long story . . . I've had a pair of brand new Altai 5" woofers for ages - I have no use for them. Then there's the nostalgia . . . the first subwoofer I ever heard was a Bose AM-5. I was fascinated by the small box with two holes beneath my neighbour's sofa.

Just for kicks I'm toying with the idea of building something similar.
You're probably still laughing at the concept of Altai woofers. The only information I have on these drivers: 40-6000Hz, 45w RMS, 92 (dbV/Pa).

I'm looking to build these drivers into a box the size of a generous night-stand drawer (14 litres).

I have the drivers, ports, capacitors all sitting around.
But I have no idea on bandpass subs.

The original AM5 bass module is a parallel-tuned 6th order bandpass alignment with a unique internal configuration - a sloping internal panel that allows the use of 6" drivers in a long and slim form factor which in allowed the use of large and straight vents. It can be approximately sim'd in Hornresp if you make a few assumptions about the volumes. It was actually the only commercial design that I've tried to directly emulate (years ago, before I knew of stuff like t/s parameters, LOL). The result sounded pretty good, actually really good, but didn't last too long, as the drivers were not really up to the task.

There's no reason why you can't use 5" drivers instead, but you will likely need to adjust the overall box volume and vent sizes and lengths to get the best results from those drivers.

Do you have the t/s parameters for the drivers that you want to use? Ideally their Qts should be fairly low (<0.35) to work well with this sort of alignment. With the t/s parameters, you can build a sim in Hornresp. Start with the dimensions of the original AM5 box and the dimensions and lengths of its vents, and then adjust them accordingly to get the best results in the sim.

Unfortunately I can't find the parameters for the drivers anywhere. Thanks for all the info. Even though I don't need to slope the internal baffle I think making a 6th order bandpass is above my pay-grade.

If anybody recognises the drivers it'd be good to have more info.
