Boring question: What's the common order of input-/output-connections

Good evening
After my 3rd or so back-plate (attempts included), I'm still not sure if there's a common order of what goes where (and why).

Functionally, as long as stuff is done reasonably, I guess it doesn't really matter if the IEC is on the right or left side. But then, should things have a certain order,

  • for technical reasons?
  • Just because it's quasi standard?
  • or is it lastly just sheer aesthetic reasons and maybe a brand's ID?

probably a bit of all, but the technical and "historic" reasons are those I'm most curious about ...

From one side: phono (1 or more), line (1 or more), tape out, main out, power in (AC line or DC), other side.
Ideally, the turntable is to the left of the preamp, and the phono input is on the end nearest the turntable.

There's no particular preferred order really except to keep noisy power away from inputs. In my line stage it's DC power umbilical, 2 pairs of balanced output on XLRs, then the inputs as follows: phono 1, phono 2, line 1, line 2, line 3, and balanced in on XLR. All of the unbalanced inputs are the same, and my sources are all pretty high level. (around CD redbook levels)

I have a lot of hardware and the arrangements change so in my case the order really doesn't matter much, cables run in lots of directions.

Aah, I—of course—made "the one" mistake: Inputs (SE) next to the 230V IEC... with some distance, still, but ... this happened because I followed the i-select's connection-order after having chosen to have the IEC on the left side (view from above)...

I think it's more a bit of a nonconsequencial glitch because it wasn't noisy (in the prototype, final backplate still on the bench)
