Boombox, your thoughts

Hi.

I wanna build myself a portable boombox which would be compactly sized, have a decent sound and somewhat a decent low end, would last at least 4 hours at medium-high volume. Bluetooth is not necessary, an aux on the backplate will be just fine.

Heres a rough example of the boombox Im after for: Small boombox for less than 80 dollars that packs a punch

Thinking about using one of these two amps:
TDA7492 12V Power Amplifier Board 2*25W Class D
Lepai LP-2020A Mini HIFI Stereo Amp

Then for the speakers, should I go with dual cone or a 2-way speaker setup? Should I add a bass reflex port?
Pioneer TS-G1321L 13cm 5.25 inch Dual cone car speakers

For the power Im gonna use a battery I have laying around in my basement, Pb 12V 4,5Ah. I want to integrate a solar controller for the battery power and management because it has a settable cutoff battery voltage and the fact it has USB ports seems awesome too for charging a cellphone exc. On the back plate I would have a power socket that I would connect with an external power supply for charging the battery through the controllers solar voltage input. At least this is how I imagine it would work.
10A dual USB Solar Controller

//Edit: The battery I already have is 7,2Ah not 4,5Ah.

Do you guys think this system would work; would you swap/add anything?

Cheers, Nino

As for speakers, I'd suggest a set of coaxial. Those dual cone units don't give enough highs for my taste. Find a decent set of component speakers and go with that..

As for the amp, I'd suggest the 2020 because it has some tone adjustment and a volume control. Those features come in handy many times..

So far from what I've researched the component speakers come at twice the price, I have a budget of €100 for the whole boombox. Will try to cop some used ones tho.

I've decided to go with Lepai 2020+, read some reviews and it seems like for the money you pay for the 2020+, you can't go wrong.

What about the solar controller idea? Would that work as I imagined it would?

Looks good to me. You could use a computer power supply (18.5 volt) through that controller with no issues. Most 12 volt solar panels have an open voltage of ~21 volts..

Use the gel cell setting to avoid damaging your battery! Those SLA batteries are persnickety with how they are charged. It's real easy to dry them out and ruin them..

I really like the dual USB jacks. That could come in handy. I use 5 volt bank batteries a lot around here and I can tie up 2-3 12 volt cigarette lighter outlets at a time..

Go for it and post some pics!

Thanks for your inputs on this OffGridKindaGuy.

But Pb is a lead acid battery? Shouldn't I set the lead Acid mode?

USB could come in handy indeed! I just hope its Apple compatible, since apple has the 2 middle data pins powered aswell for the charging when a lot of chinese usb chargers have only outer two pins powered.

This is a rookie question but If I were to get the 2 way LF-HF system but without the crossover - can I just hook them in parallel on the amp output, so 1 LF and 1 HF driver per channel.

1-SLA batteries can be ruined if too high of a bulk charge voltage is applied to them. (Much like gel cells) Use the setting with the lowest bulk voltage level. If the float voltage setting is adjustable, put it at 13.2-13.4 volts. If the bulk charge setting is adjustable, (Length of Time) make it as short as possible..

2-I'd bet the USB ports are very basic. (2 outer pins) If you can open the charge controller and short the 2 center pins together, the Apple unit will fast charge..

3-You "Could" do that BUT things get complicated! You would need to mono the input to the amp to get all of the sound (both channels) and protect the HF driver somehow with a resistor/capacitor. (Basic Crossover)

The most simple solution would be to find a pair of coaxial 2-way speakers and go with that. You'll have tone adjustment with the Lepai..

From what it says in description float voltage can be set so thats good.

1. Floating charge Voltage(HVD 13.3V-15V)

About the USB mod, I've read there should be a resistor soldered to the middle pins for the Apple devices to work with the USB port.

Yes I think I might go the coaxial way.

So I've done some more resarch and decided to go with the Yuan Jing TA2020 MKIII amp instead of the Lepai. I have read the tone control circuit on the Lepai unpleasently affects the sound.

Also I decided to go with the speakers used in a popular boominator project which are Monacor SP-60/4. I can get a pair of these relatively cheap.

But what I would want to ask you guys, if I i combined these or these to go along with them, instead of the Dayton ND16FA-6 tweeters. Would you happen to have any kind of feedback or expirineces with these tweeters? Would they make a good combo with the Monacors Sp 60/4?

go for this amp:
Tda7492 hoch macht leistungsstarken Verstrker bord amplificador digitale 50 w* 2/100 w se mit heizkrper hei in Funktion😀er Verwendung von hohen- Geschwindigkeit smt-bestckung maschine, bertemperatur reflow, die Leistung ist sehr aus integrierte

or a little more expensive, but better:
Tda7498 100w+100w class d verstrker brett mit hoher endstufe bord in Tda7498 100w+100w class d verstrker brett mit hoher endstufe bordTda7498 ist 100w +100 w verstrker, mit Untersttzung aus Verstrker auf AliExpress.com | Alibaba Group

Leave those car speakers where they belong.
Get two Visaton BG20.
Put each in a 30L vented cabinet.
Get foam material and polyester wool (from the cheapest pillow you find) and put it inside the cabinet.

Use SLA batteries.
Get two (if you can achieve two) of the cheapest 12V you can get.

Thank me later.

So I've been reseaching some more and decided to adjust my budget a little for this combination.

For the mid-bass driver one of these two:
Faital 4FE32 Woofer 4" 30 w 91 DB 4 Ohm New | eBay

Monacor SPP 110 4 Mid Woofer 10cm 60Watt 4ohm Con Membrana in Carbonio Home | eBay

And of these two tweeters:
Monacor HT 30 Tweeter PA Mini A Tromba 100W Max 8ohm Ferrofluido 67X67M | eBay

Monacor DTM 104 8 Tweeter HiFi Dome 25 mm 100 Watt Max 8 Ohm HQ 104 Mm | eBay

What do you guys think about this combination?

After all I picked two FaitalPro 4FE32 4ohm drivers only with this design and a YJ TA2020 MKIII amp. Port will be slotted with height of 1cm, width 15cm and depth of 4cm. Under the port is a recessed aluminium control panel opening. Will post the project photos as I go with it.

Any input on these picks would be appreciated.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
