Boombox question.

Hi, guys!

I'm building a boombox. I've got all the parts I need, but I'm not sure about the design.

I'm plan to use plywood, simple 2-speaker box, nothing funny. The thing is I want to make the back of the box removable, because I access to the battery every time I will need to charge it. How would you suggest to do that? I was thinking of using 4 screws, but I think the wood will damage with too much openings and closings, so I'm not sure if this is a good idea. Any other suggestions?

The five sides are sealed to maintain speaker-enclosure integrity. The sixth side only needs to be rattle proof. Vent holes can be drilled in it also; even SLA might vent gas that is corrosive to copper and/or other metals used in projects.

17mm plywood, glued and screwed. Rear panel is one piece. Front panel has a cut out and cover panel to give access to the amp support panel and SLA battery which is clamped to the bottom panel. Speaker cabinets are separated by the internal walls of the amp centre section. Each cabinet is air tight and filled with acoustic fill.

8 inch drivers and dome tweeters (Sony SS-S30 6 ohm, 92 dB) - 1981.

Charging of the 7.2 aH battery via side mounted female marine cigarette lighter. Input via 2 RCA connectors. Volt meter mounted in removable panel.

The Lepai drives these old Sony's with ease. Each channel is in it's own sealed cabinet but not great separation though due to the speakers only being a foot apart. Big bass and very clear highs with the vintage dome tweeters (original Sony crossovers). The Lepai does drive these speakers pretty hard with no real distortion evident until almost full volume. I do tend to keep it around the 2 o'clock position or below so I can look after these good old speakers. It's pretty loud at this volume level anyway.

Overall, if you prefer deep controlled bass and clear highs, this is a good simple setup.

The pair of Sony SS-S30 free standing speakers were a $20 Ebay find.

This is my second DIY box. I used a Lepai amp on my first project with 6.5 inch 4 ohm car speakers. This new setup is far superior - sensitive 6 ohm speakers seem to be the sweetspot for the Lepai amp.

Good luck with your project,

James..... 🙂

Nice work (as usual) Jimmy.

Two of mines DIY ones, based on scrap wood & Speakers (vintage speakers like yours) and some digital amps also!!
The big black and the lilac one...

Cheers.
