I have been looking at digital cable/interface reflections on CD processors and as stated by everyone, 50R cables are poisonous, causing the sqaure waves to be very 'knky'. What is curious, however, is the relatively 'minor' effect of adaptors. These are clearly of the wrong diameter ratios, but the effect seems to be confined to a jagged leading/trailing edges. They also sound relatively benign. Also SPDIF terminated cables with one or two adaptors of the right nominal impedance don't do nearly as much harm as 50R cables.
I also tried a 75R BNC terminator on the scope, to see if there is signigicant mismatch at the scope. This actually retsores the abrupt leading edges of the square waves, with slight overshoots. It also causes sonic changes although I haven't decided if this is good or bad.
Explanations/experiences?
