Only a few factories worldwide produce the black colour needed to paint the said equipment.
One day, a employee had an accident with a can of white paint in one of the biggest factories.
He accidentally mixed it with the black paint.
So, the paint turned grey and the production unit realized too late that a few million units were already produced in grey.
It became a fashion and from then on, other factories copied the ‘accident’.

I’m well informed that Poobah was the root of the cause in that 'accident'.

As a smoker, black is the only viable colour for me... the others all show discolouration after some time... I also love how black equipment hides themself from view.
