just joined the forum thought i say hi and ask a few questions....

so HEY!!!

and the question:

Thinking of building a subwoofer for home use to compliment my mordaunt short 906s. amazing speakers with tight clean bass (well to my ears anyway)

Thought of using this http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Drive_Units/Alcone/bx10.htm

with 2 PRs:
http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Drive_Units/Alcone/bx10p.htm

the PR will have 570g total added each to the membrane

this will be in a 40-42 litre box

the plate amp will be:

I have been looking and have seen this subwoofer on the bkelec website
http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Drive_Units/BSB/bsbl10-500.htm

The above seems like a better choice mainly due to the low VAS..

HAs anyone used the above subwoofer and any ideas on design...

prefer not to use ports hence the PRs...

any opions welcome

thanks

I've only tried the lm3886 on the XLS 10 in OB, but perhaps a bridged/parallel lm4780 would give enough oomph.

The CPC plate amp has a lot of features, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. For the cost of a GB150D I'd actually check that out first, but again I'm assuming the DIY route and you'll be losing the features of the plate amp.

thanks for the replies

I checked out the xls and pr but i wanted to try the alcone sub as not many people have used them or that i have seen...

I'm probably going to go with one pr with the bx10.

as for the amp well its the cheapest that i ahve seen with boost built in.

I could build an amp as a project but i have just finished a degree in electronic engineering and need a little break..... maybe a year or so then i can use pspice and matlab/simulink for the amplifer design and expected results...

On another note can anyone tell me if the following crossover is using a linkwitz riley crossover... and if i open it which op amp should i see?(noy very clued up about linkwitz riley!!!)

its says its a 3 way crossover with subwoofer function..have used it and its pretty good.. the sub can be crossed over at 60,80,100,120 Hz and slope rate is 12dB or 18dB. Also has bass boost at 45Hz and 80Hz

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
