Bill Fitzmaurice vs The World (a "what PA speakers to buy/build" thread)

You might want to start with building a very good system to use as home hifi then see where it goes.

Consider BMS 18N862s for bass.

Look at 1.4" drivers from RCF, Faital or 18 Sound. They all have new models with matching horns that look great.

Find a nice efficient 12 to bridge the gap.

That'll get you a system that's simple, new, high quality, will fit in your listening room as well as an SUV. Sound great and play loud.
If you can get them some of the Celestion horns and compression drivers take some beating.

I built a pair of Tuba 45 Subs (which is a three-quarter scale Tuba 60) with the help of a cabinet maker friend. I am a bit of an experienced woodworker and my friend is a journeyman custom furniture and cabinet maker. Took about 100 hours of my time and 50 hours of his time to build the pair correctly in a extremely well equipped woodshop. Was it worth it? Definitely!

This pair of Tuba 45s have much, much higher sound quality than any of the powered PA subwoofers that people are using. Actually the only thing that comes close are arrays of subwoofers used at larger venues (2000+). It’s like they have that larger concert hall low distortion bass with the musicality of an audiophile subwoofer and the output of two 18” subs but in a package that easily fits in a compact suv.

Every time I gig with them all the sound geeks ask me what they are and some have even say that they have “ruined” thier systems and that after hearing the tubas they will never be happy with their powered subs.

Just sayin- the Tuba 45 has proven to live up to the hype. Yeah- it might be Bill against the world but I’m with bill on the Tuba 45 and 60 and nothing I have heard even comes close for the size/weight

*Yes, of course with proper DSP and amplification. But you need that with any passive subwoofer horn or not…

Bills stuff is ok, but it's beaten today by newer designs. Having built just about everything you could think of, tapped horns are my go to for low end anymore. I don't bother with tops because I can't make anything cheaper as what I can buy and keep it active with DSP.
