Beyer Dynamic conversion

More than likely this has been discussed somewhere. I ran into Custom Cans while looking for a way to make the cable on my Beyer Dynamic DT770 pro phones detachable. Of course, this led to more options for fine tuning the cups of the cans as well. I do not regret it so far, but am not done with the initial wiring. Beyer Dynamic uses a certain wiring for the drivers and well, Custom Cables uses yet another. I don't see a problem since Beyer Dynamic has the back of the drivers coded for + and -. It is just the difference between the two methods makes one start to guess what goes where. I am almost done and shown here is the original wiring from the factory.
I should add that the first photo is of the left driver and of course the next photo is of the right driver. Beyer Dynamic cable attaches to the left side only. I am starting to really prefer this wiring arrangement.

Last night, I completed the process of soldering all the wires in the right places and somehow got it correct the first time around. Not really anything to show here, since heatshrink has covered the work and the cable just has that bump or two before it enters the final connector to the cans. That was done because the cable chosen was larger than life for fitting into the connector and so a splice had to be made just before the connector for the sake of fitting everything together. Done.
Now, on to the differences that the new internal padding may have made, along with the sizable copper ring that grips the magnet of the driver. I understand this to be a sort of weight ballast to improve the bass. You tell me. So, then I have connected the phones to two different headphone amps. One is the Whammy, and the other is a SPL Phonitor headphone amp. Both are of equal quality and need no excuses made for them. There are some caveats though. The SPL amp is fed directly from either the external DAC which has an output that uses a tube, or the amp can be fed from a coaxial cable from my BluSound CD ripper. The Whammy receives its signal after being passed through Black Ice (Think Fosgate) SS-X soundstage expander that is variable. So, as you can see, the horse race between the two headphone amps is already fixed from both ends. What I did to a large part was to have each headphone amp sound as similar as possible (both to my preferences in different ways) so that each set of headphones could be heard as being similar. The other set of phones are the Hi-Fi Man 400se, some of my favorites.

For now, let me conclude with a short impression of the Beyer Dynamic phones after modification. I didn't think that the bass really needed improvement, but now I hear a difference that is worthwhile. Not lower or bigger so much as tighter. Midrange and some treble remains a strong point of these cans since my aging ears need the boost in these areas. Yes, the cans do sound a little forward I bet for most people, yet I don't find them to be aggressively so.
One thing about this mod process>>> I bet that nobody really cares for soldering tiny wires, and I am no exception. It helps to use a third hand sort of device to hold wires in place to be soldered. This along with a small soldering tip will get you a long way towards avoiding damage as well as a lousy solder joint to begin with.

What type of connector did you use on the headphones themselves?
I really prefer 4 wire for headphones as it allows balanced connection and the elimination of TRS plugs/jacks, but that would be more difficult with the single entry scheme used here as the G are combined between channels. Not impossible though.

The plug is a 4 wire connector that allows for balanced operation if you choose that. In my case, I just wanted a longer cable that was also detachable in case I would use maybe a shorter one. I agree with the balanced wiring of headphones but in my case I do not have a balanced amp to go with it.
