Better than Bowers and Wilkins?

Hello All,
I am looking for a mid/tweeter set that will improve on a past set up, which was a B&W 801 series III mid (5") and a B&W Silver Signature tweeter. Here are my criteria:
-5" mid (maybe 6", but limited space)
-Tweeter that can be mounted in front of mid coaxial
-Under $2000 for the combo
-I will be crossing actively
-I will hi-pass at about 200hz
-Looking for the best on axis near field sound quality
Also, if anyone can let me know how the newer B&W are compared to 20 years ago, I would appreciate it. Looks like the new stuff is made in China.

Thanks in advance, Mike.

I can't comment on their sound, but soooo many hi-end companies (check out Munich 2014) are using Accuton drivers, this month they are also releasing their own DSP.

Worth a look, considering a $10k speaker is probably only $200-$300 in parts, $2000 can get you a nice piece of uber hi-end.

Failing that, buy the Orion or newer LX521 kit?

A 10k speaker is usually at least 1k in parts.

B&W make excellent in house drivers and have the advantage of an economy based on being able to do so. Their loudspeakers tend to represent extremely good value for money, even if their design ethos doesn't match what yours might be.

Time has moved on though and 20 year old B&W drivers are likely to be easily beaten by good quality modern stuff.

If you want a coaxially mounted system, why not just go coaxial to start with?

Sounds like it would be pretty much perfect.

Thanks for the quick response. Is there a particular Accuton mid you recommend? I am trying to stay about 5"/130mm. Also- can I get away with mounting the tweeter in front of the mid if it is small enough? For my particular application, the coaxial seems to work better. Thanks!
