Hi
Just curious what would be better sounding amplifier to HK990 ?
So far i have modded HK980 and it sounded quite nice... would be willing to say it sounded more "musical" than the current HK990 with a bit of mods.
I tried to go to tube amps but with the kind of music i listen to ( genres all over the place ) it seems not to be fit for the job.
Power wise i have no reservations (running Fostex FE206En ) as a matter of fact i was looking at maybe building the "Le Monstre" with original 8W of claimed output.
Are there any other more "musical" amps than the HK990 in the DIY space ?
Is it even worth to DIY anything since the HK990 seems to play everything effortlessly ?
Thanks for the answers 🙂

Better, less well, forget this notion and have fun by assembling yourself your amp, it's part of the way.
There are many schematics which are musical, the 8W monster is one of them, but like all "simple" amps it requires a certain requirement when has the selection of components and the implementation of the power supply.
What is good when you "enter" into DIY is that you are a priori virgin so take advantage of it. 😉

I get your point ... i asked because i have way too much things that interest me ( many hobbies ).
That's why i was asking if it's worth DIYing something ... it's not because of money, it's because of time and effort that you have put into something that in the end won't probably better from what you can afford in a commercial wise product.
But i'll take your advice and maybe start a project during winter ( christmas / new years ).
So Le Monstre is pretty good or would you reccomend any other design ?

"Le Monstre" has been a benchmark for all these years, but it takes knowledge to make it work as it should and some components have become very hard to find.
I never listened to the "updated" versions with modern components, but I owned a monster for years, it worked with truck batteries and it was a real treat.
in the end, it depends on your skills for the choice of the "first DIY"

It's not my first DIY 😉
So the original Le Monstre it is. thanks for the info 🙂 the very hard to find components shouldn't be a problem... i'm bored at work sometimes 😛

so I advise you to mount the original, the real one and I also advise you to read the original article on its creation / conception but also the thread on Diyaudio etc etc etc
