Bi-amping with identical amplifiers is usually best, sub-woofers disincluded.

I'd disagree - I've made a number of two-way systems using valves for the tweeter and transistors for the bass, and it gives the best of both worlds. After all, if you pursue that argument to its logical conclusion, you wouldn't be able to use a dome tweeter with a cone bass because they're different.

I think you have to avoid extreme differences, which is why I'm a little cautious about SE + transistor. In the same way, I think it's difficult to integrate drivers made of different materials, yet there are loudspeakers with 8" plastic cones and 1" aluminium domes

Active $-way with tube amplification!

Hi,
I have used PP 6BQ5/EL84 amplifiers in a 4-way system with good results. I used solidstate amp for sub-bass, 6550 amp for mid-bass, EL34 amp for mid-range, and 6BQ5 amp for high frequencies.
I used an EICO HF86, Dynaco ST-35 in the tweeter section with various other amplifiers in the system.
There are several good vintage 6BQ5 amplifiers that are readily available for less than $200.
Good Luck
