Some months ago a guy tells me, the best available DACs should be from the company that Mr. Lavry works for.

Ultra analog D20400a was designed also by Dan Lavry - go to post #101 under

Ultra Analog D20400 datasheet?

The DAC mentioned by this guy should be the model "DA11", "DA2002"or "DA924" from Lavry Engineering (special feature is
" αβC αcoustic βit Correction™ ") :

Much more better than devices from e. g. MSB technology - go to

and several other models with extrem high price when buying.

Is this true ?

Lavry has been in the professional audio dac business for a long time. A/D, too. Haven't heard too much about his products for awhile. So, don't know how his latest compares sound-wise to Benchmark and Crane Song. Those two are tough to beat in the pro audio / recording / mastering world, however.

The very important and successful mastering engineer, that I recently posted a short interview of, uses Lavry Gold (seen in another video) but it seems that his techs modify the boxes for single ended in/out. With their line amps.

A discerning friend of mine uses Prism Dream in his studio so that must be very good too.

Lavry Gold hasn't been made for a long time. Don't think some of the parts needed to make one are available anymore.

Prism has had a very good reputation for a long time, and have also been known for being very expensive. However, over a period of quite of few years advances in technology have helped to make very high performance data converters more widely available at somewhat lower costs, but the really good stuff is still pretty expensive compared to most average people's budgets.

A friend of mine uses the DA924 and has been kind enough(?) to lend it to me. I benchmark against my versions of ESS sabre with different output stages. I have tried the twisted pear dac with tube op, Legato, IVY, transformer op etc.

DA924 crushes all the versions above in 4 out of 5 criteria. It excels the Sabre dac in dynamics, musicality, bass and decay. Only in fine resolution the modern dac is better.

Now I use the ntd1 output to a Buffalo32 and perhaps the can go on pair with the DA924. Not sure and don’t want to try😉

If you can get your hands on it then try it! The limitation is 24/96 and perhaps serviceability.

The best Sabre DAC I know of is Benchmark DAC-3. Don't think any other Sabre can equal it. A close competitor however is Crane Song Solaris. Solaris uses an AKM dac chip, but otherwise employs a very similar system architecture to DAC-3. Both upsample to 211kHz and use custom reconstruction filters. Both also have very low jitter, with Solaris maybe being a little better in that respect.

Without comparing against DAC-3, claims that a particular DAC beats *all* Sabre DACs probably cannot be taken as fully substantiated or necessarily accurate.

A little information on Solaris is available here: Crane Song Solaris >> Sonic Circus
