Also called Dry Cleaning fluid.
Used in many industries for cleansing metal parts.
Dan.
Dry cleaning fluid is benzene not 'turps'. Benzene is supposedly carsogenic but if you mix it 50/50 with carbon tetrachloride (tippex thinner) it makes an excellent industrial grade solvent, used in the plating industry.
Neither is available in the USA "over-the-counter" both are banned substances, as they are both highly carcinogenic - or so they say.
Nothing in the USA is benzene any longer. Especially not dry cleaning fluid.

Okay. Petrol is also a good cleaner as well as laquer thinners.
I use the same oil that I use to lubricate my Garrard bearings and heat it up. After a while you see clouds of old oil and dirt coming out of the bearing. As soon as the clouds stop to come out of the bearing it is clean, lubed with new oil and ready to re-install.
Cleaning sintered bearing, either wipe it out with a rag, or I would go for Morfeus idea. After that put in a lockable jar with sintered bearing oil and with a hand vacum pump aply some vacum to the jar. Watch the rising air bubles, as the oil replaces the air in the bearing. If it's a ball bearing, the best is to soak it in benzine, lighter fluid ,etc. and while holding it still, blow it out with clean filtered compressed air. This might help, but it's best to change the bearing, as it is very difficult to perfecly clean a ball bearing.
