Best option driver or application?

Hello,

Looking to add a bass driver to support a KEF R3 speaker project in the spare room. Bass driver would be built into an existing cabinet.

Enclosure volume 2.8 ft3. (Possible to raise to 3.6ft3 but would not be ideal)

Max driver size 12 inch diameter.
Power requirements not a concern.
Frequency range : 40-500hz.
Good off axis performance important.
Target 110db+ with low distortion (-40db?)

I currently have available:
AE TD10m
JBL 2206H (don't think it has the original cone though, so if this doesn't measure well, I may need to recone)

Would either meet requirements? Or is there a better choice out there for the application?

Thanks.

Alright, depending on your personal taste, these drivers could satisfy using usual tricks of bass boost. I suppose there is a provison for an active high pass for the R3 to be relieved of any upper bass duties, bearing in mind it is low passed passively at 400 Hz. I'll give a simple sim a go to evaluate hitting Xmech, which is 10mm for AE TD 10M. Longer stroked unit might be a better choice.

AE Dipole 10 has got better T/S parameters favoring closed cabinets, excellent bass performance F3/F6/F10=35/28/23 Hz in 80 litres, estimated with 100W of input power to excite the membrane to no more than 16mm of excursion. You do not need to burn power on bass boost for it already has it on its own.

How are you calculating these values? Product page suggests sealed volume of 21-42L as midrange, Fs is 40.1hz, Xmax is 6mm, and Basta and Boxsim say 7-8L for Qtc 0.7 closed.

Does that mean the TD10m cannot meet spec due to excursion limits?

I assume power compression would be a factor if we are near limits also?
They used to be rated at 3,3 mm xmax, 10xmech, you will likely have a tight surround before 10mm.
There are better choices for a woofer in 3 way, as others have indicated.
The 2206 would be a more suiting choice and i very hard to beat for the price used.
