I asked Jeff Bagby at the Parts Express forum what he thought of the woofer + fullrange combination and he told me that people who believe it's superior to a woofer + tweeter combination are just fooling themselves. (He did say he tried with an Alpair 10 and a Jordan full range.)
I have great respect for Jeff, but if those are the best examples of FRs he has tried he is not talking from good experience.

Personally I'd go FR with a FF85WK - I hope to before too long myself
How big is your desk and what volumes do you intend to listen at? Do you value clarity, detail and imaging or guts, thunder and nose bleed volume?
You'd be surprised how low you will want to play music sat 2ft from the driver(s)

I don't know if you're in a rush or not and how much you want to spend. If I had enough money and was in a rush, I might buy Creative T12 speakers while I wait to have some speakers built.
Then I might go to a place like solen.ca where they can design the crossovers for you for free (and design the cabs for free if I remember correctly). Anyway, then I'd take the plans and send them to meniscusaudio where they can cut the wood panels for you. As for drivers, like I said, I'm not the expert here but did read here and there. So, I might just go with Peerless woofers and Vifa tweeters. Sure, I'd like to do more research on Peerless, Scan-Speak, Seas Prestige, HiVi, Silver Flute and SB Acoustics. But, in a rush, I might go Peerless/Vifa and hook it up to a SMSL SA-50 amplifier from eBay for $77 (and Asus Xonar D1 sound card).
Other names I might be generally interested in: Aurasound, Fountek, Visaton, Wavecor, Beyma Studio, Celestion Pro, Ciare, Fane Pro, Monacor, Sica, Triangle (some of these are on European sites) and some models of Faital Pro and Eminence at us speaker.com. (These are brands that are somewhat affordable. I do not include Dayton because my messages on the PE forum disappeared for no apparent reason. And also Tang Band because I think they make the drivers for Dayton. I'm not sure if I'd bother with Fostex because if they're so recommended I'd rather save them for last.)
Anyway, from my quick reading on tweeters, one of the other name I saw often was Fountek (apart from Vifa).

I've always preferred coax drivers for nearfield listening.

Crossover schematic available too.

+1 on the fullrange driver for desktop application. Here's what I currently run:
Fostex FF125K in a small bass-reflex. This is not a good enclosure for it if you are not nearfield. The alignment is over-damped, which produces satisfyingly deep and smooth bass at the seated position, with the wall/desktop boundary loads.
For something available right now, I'd like to try any of the small FF-WK's.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Sure you can. A demo at last year's VI diyFEST between Over Night Sensation & mMar-Kel70 sold a lot of EL70 for Bob.

I still think my Sophomores sound better than the OS's do.
M4N/TN25 combo.

To me- the EL-70 needs a tweeter. I heard those in a Jim Griffin Bipole.

If space or size is a concern have you considered a set of exciters?
exciter - Parts Express Ships Fast and Ships Free
Its fun to experiment with differnet media with which to attach them. For low level listening and a small sub crossed pretty high they work pretty well. YMMV

If you can find something like these vintage Goodmans Axiom 10's ,here with a pair of RCF bulls eye domes. Works very well for close range.
These are full range or are they for woofer???...looks good though
