I've seen this discussion a few times around here, what I'd imagine is the best you'll get is a pair of nice full rangers, like the CHP-70 which has a really nice price on Madisound.
There's a thread with some interesting and small enclosures, too.

what u did....interesting project
I was wondering about the results of the new MA 12P myself for desktop monitors
Alas, after becoming available for the last 6 weeks or so--crickets on that one. The speakers can be as tall as my computer monitor and fairly deep so might fit. They run about $275 a pair so worth a look as they are in your price range.

I've been listening to a set for the last 5-weeks. Not something i would consider for this ap.

can you give some example

Like the Kef IQ series where the tweeter is mounted in the throat of the midbass driver.
Meh, I still like the fullrange idea. I've had a pair of overnight sensations on my desk for a while, but I'm going to convert over to fullrangers once I get off my duff and finish a few other projects I've got cooking.

This is a really good small speaker for AK.

THere is one even smaller and it full kit form from someone I can't remember. I heard them at the AK fest as was very impressed.

I found the one I was thinking of. It is the Over Night Sensation. I don't think you can beat the sound quality for the price.

I was looking at this thread, they are rather large for a desktop but you can always add a helper supertweeter if need be.

Just another option to throw out there--at least they are smaller than Beta12LTA boxes. 😱

I went with a single full range driver in a small enclosure that was easy to build and I could get a pair of them out of a single sheet of 24" x 24" birch plywood.
I use them with my iMac and my family likes them a lot.
