I would be very wary taking advice, without knowing what have been done on x-over and equalising of driver/horn combo...
While true, you've got to start somewhere. For most, peer review is a useful way to narrow the field, and most of us cannot afford to buy and test every potentially suitable driver out there. The feedback here is at least useful, and the stakes not high. I went out on a limb and bought a pair of TD-4001 about 5 months ago, it worked out well, but I wasted significant funds on the drivers that preceded them. I am able to test and measure and provide EQ - none of which guarantees a subjectively satisfactory result. Peer feedback when available is useful, as always taken with a grain of salt.

It is not said enough for dummies like I am.The more appropriate question might be, what is the best horn for your needs. The driver is to some degree just coming along for the ride.
In fact when you are asking the best cheap compression driver (quote unquote : I know few and do not want to drop in a mortgage to affoard high efficienty with compression drivers, big boys systems, etc... is to do the thing (imho) in the rigth order :
So without knowing more when a member is asking (aka : we do not know your background, experience, equipment...) , the rigth order should be when asking for low budget comp (in mind you do not want endless bills to setup a high eff loudspeaker which is meaning you are unexperienced) is :
- first invest in a system that alllows electronic Xover with EQ : active filter, IIR and/or FIR equalizing : You DO need eq which is harder passive than active.
- choose not a CD but a combo horn/CD that is known to workfine but if you rules what you want.
- Think it as a whole design with the low end and the High frequencies if 3 ways or more.
If you wanna give CDs a try w/o spending much

I have not heard the 4550 but I did have the 4540ND on five different horns (yes, with proper eq) and thought it was earpearcing horrible.Hi,
Nobody talked about the horn XT1086 and BMS 4550 - 5530ND, no tought about this unit ?
It's not technically a 1" but it's actually almost a 1" driver - BMS 4554, also a very nice and still affordable driver.
(It just has a very a long conical section at the exit, which makes it 1.4")
(Measured on a horn that is even not a good match regarding the exit angle.)
