I am working on a mod to the DCX that involves removing the input/output board. I want to keep using the RS232 port. Can I just go from the D-sub pins to the input on the DSP board? Or is there some sort of circuitry on the I/O board that processes the D-sub input? Thanks.
No, no circuitry, but a few of the handshake lines (1,4,6) on the DB-9 connector are looped. But your connected computer/cable probably won't care if it sees those.

I'll drop rs232 out and provide or I2S input with masterclock out from DCX2496, or I2S output of 3 pairs stereo for external DACs like DBX 4800 do.

You need 3 pins from the small header: #9, 17, 18
These correspond to pins 5, 3 and 2 on the D-sub.
5 is ground, 2 and 3 are Rx and Tx.
(I mixed up Rx and Tx when building and I forget which is which)
I used a D-sub connector with a Phoenix style breakout board and wired the loopbacks onto it.
Jumper pins 1+4+6 together, and also 7+8.
Just make sure the connector you get will fit between the chassis wall and power supply.
